Title: [D&D] Functional wings for Medium half-dragon
Post by: RedFox on February 06, 2007, 10:11:58 PM
Is there a way to make that possible?  I have a PC acquiring the half-dragon Template via the WotC Savage Progression Class (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030912a) and he'd really like to grow fully-functional (i.e. capable of flight) wings.  Is there a feat or something somewhere that would allow this as a natural progression of the half-dragon template class?  I've checked the Draconomicon and Races of the Dragon and neither has anything for this.

In Races of the Dragon there is an alternate racial progression that takes you from normal race to race + the Draconic template to race + the Half Dragon Template. It starts on page 70 and goes a couple of pages. It allows large creatures to gain wings and flight with four levels into the progression, but I don't see why that couldn't be changed to allow medium creatures to get wings as well.

Let him spend an extra LA on it at the end of the progression.

Just for wings?

Nah.

Y'know, screw it.  I'll just let him burn a feat to grow functional wings.  That seems fair to me.

The feats for wings in Races of the Dragon are progressive:

The first is like 'Dragon Wings' which gives you a +10 jump. They aren't functional yet.
I think it's the 'Improved Dragon Wings' that allows flight.

Ok, you want to know the easy way? If you are indeed acquiring this on an already existing character, don't go half-dragon. Go Dragonborn (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ub/20060131a). Choose 'Wings' as an aspect. Once you have 6 hit dice, you can fly.

Thats a +0 LA race change. You basicly build an egg, dedicate your life to Bahamut, and when you come out, your'e a dragonoid guy.

Savage Species puts wings at +1 LA. Whether it's accurate or not depends on the campaign. Low level with lots of outside combat wings are definitely worth it. High level or lots of tight spaces make them near worthless.

You could also go with the Winged template in SavS. It's +1 LA too but has a few other minor boosts to it.

The big question with wings, for me at least, is how often falling hazards and difficult terrain come up in the campaign.

That's close to a universal thing for LA though, without some sort of progression built into the LA part of the PC. "Balanced" or better at low level usually translated to some margin of suckage at highlevels. Especially for spellcasters.

The LA buyoff rules in Unearthed Arcana supposedly help with that. I've never used them, but LAs are rare in all but my arena games, and the buyoff rules are a munchkin's paradise for characters that don't have to start at 1st level.

edit: I think this is them. (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/unearthedRaces.html#reducing-level-adjustments)
