This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The title says it all. I've been haunting the forums and all I want to talk about is 40k. Only. I have nothing to say to start things off. Damnit all.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

To this day, I hate the Following Fire rule for fully automatic weapons.  Granted, this was old school 1st edition 40K I was playing, but six out my crack squad of ten King Bees Imperial commandos were taken out by a series of lucky rolls on a Following Fire ruling.  Granted, after that I got really careful at measuring the spacing between my figs as I advanced on an objective, but still...man!

I loved the random charts in Rogue Trader.  The mutants were horrible, the random missions were futile, the equipment load for some of the factions was terribly erratic.  Good times, good times.

Yar...

But we need to make it RPG related so I'm in the right place. ;)

Have you tried to run Rogue Trader as an RPG?  That's how I tried to use it for years, failing miserably....

Three of them that are centered on different aspects (working at different power levels) of the WH40K world.

True. Eventually. Of course, it would be nice if they expanded it out from the Imperium a bit. I mean, they do have a wide playing feild.

That and making it three books is officially Dumb.

I have spoken, thus it is so.

Why? It sounds like it is three different games. Or you think they'll canibalize sales that much between the 3 different games? They aren't releasing them all at the same time.

Quite, they cover different sorts of game experiences (well, power levels anyway) and I suspect most of the fanbase will buy them all regardless.

There's also a fairly detailed 40k rpg on a yahoogroup somewhere.

What I want is a Warhammer Ancients rpg, but if I talk about that here Spike will zap me with his pikachu powers, so I won't.

Doesn't sound like three different games to me. Sounds like releasing D&D fourth edition (notional) with seperate games where the Fighter D&D is compatable with the 'Wizard D&D', which is compatable with the 'Cleric...' you get the picture?

To be blunt, lets take one sampling... the Inquisitor version. Now, your typical inquisitor, by the novels anyway, often contracts with... if that is the term, a Rogue Trader to do his business...

Oh, look at that, Rogue Trader is a seperate game coming out much later? WTF?!

The same relationship between Space Marines and Iquisitors AND Rogue Traders can be made as well.  Rogue Traders often had (at least at one time) small compliments of Space Marines on board as they expanded the Imperium. Likewise, any Inquisitor expecting heavy fighting could draw upon the Space Marines for 'firepower'. IF the opponent is Alien, they have the Deathwatch, if the foe is Chaos, they have the Grey Knights... that's two seperate chapters of Space Marines to call upon yet we need a seperate GAME (not book... GAME) to play Space marines?

Fuck that noise.  And yeah, they'll gank every last dollar out of my wallet... the fuckin' leeches.

To me the new games sound like Exalted. Solars are not Dragonblooded are not Lunars are not Sidereal.

Diffrent games, different styles, but otherwise compatible.

meh...I've got =][=nquisitor and I've got GURPS 4e, once Ultra Tech gets here I can go that route.

=][= is an interesting beast, a strange mix of the advantages and disadvantages of rpgs and wargames.

It doesn't require a strictly continuous group, it has the magnificent scope of free form consentual story telling, it's got a really neat combat system that gives a far more detailed interpretation of the hardware and tactical circumstances found in the 40k universe, and yet it's even more vulnerable to differences of vision and assholes, it's harder to maintain a focussed vision, it also has the arms race aspect of wargames that's a problem.

Oh well, it's been on my mind lately.  I'm actually going to play it in the next week or so.  It just takes so long to get a couple dozen figures converted, and scenery built, and custom sculpt and cast the stuff they don't make.

Yes, my miniatures thing is more of a psychosis than an obsession, why do you ask?
