Title: Craftable items from mushrooms, plants, animal parts?
Post by: mAcular Chaotic on April 07, 2018, 06:36:35 PM
I'm running a D&D 5e game and I want to give players options to make things out of the various things they find while exploring the forests and caves. Stuff like picking mushrooms and eating them so they do weird and fun things, or getting an animal organ that grants some magical power.

The specific thing I'm looking at right now are mushrooms. Did you guys ever do anything like that before? Do you have any ideas for what kind of different mushrooms and effects I could use? Are there resources out there for this sort of thing?

If you have it look up the materials effects chart in the AD&D DMG. Its got a few lists of properties attributed to items.

As for mushrooms.
Effects.
Causes eater to Grow as per growth spell.
Causes eater to shrink as per shrink spell.
Causes eater to hallucinate. Hoard of the dragon Queen has this as a trap effect making the victem act similar to a confuse spell.
Causes eater to gradually turn into a Mycacind mushroom people.
Causes eater to pass out and have fantastical dreams which also act as a guide to a problem the eater was thinking of. This was an effect waaaaaay back in Famine in Far-Go.
Causes eater to be violently ill as per a stinking cloud spell.
Causes eater to be able to see invisible beings
Causes eater to be able to see unseen spirits
Causes eater to be able to talk to animals, or a specific type of animal.
Causes eater to be able to pass into the fey realm.
Causes eater to be rooted to the spot.
Wild boars attempt to eat eater.
Mycacind mushroom people attack the eater.
Mycacind mushroom people are friendly to the eater.

Not much on mushrooms but over the years I created some rules on non-magical elixirs.

When the men on the chessboard get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom, and your mind is moving low

Go ask Alice, I think she'll know

I like your list:). Wonder where in my current game one could find some mushrooms?
Ah well, it's Erisa, so the answer ought to be "anywhere";).

I bought a box of painted mushrooms on a Dwarven Forge Kickstarter. My players have come to fear "Doomshrooms" which indeed, appear in a great many places and varieties. They could make some pretty potent vials of acid out of them, but so far the players have decided not to mess with them if at all possible (they tend to explode in a cloud of acid when molested).

RuneQuest's trollpak had a whole load of stuff about Mushrooms and what effects they had. Many of the effects were similar to Omega's list.

IMC today Ellie the Warlock ate a glowing snail to see what it would do.

It made her tummy glow. :D

Any thoughts on what other magical effects a glowing magical snail could be used for?

There is this old computer game, Nethack, where your character is expected to eat all sorts of things.  If the character eats yellow mold, it hallucinates.  Not a good thing.  If it eats brown mold, it may gain cold resistance, a red mold, fire resistance.  Eat a shrieker, possibly gain poison resistance.  Eat a gelatinous cube and get a bad case of heartburn, and maybe a resistance --cold, fire, electrical or sleep.  Eating Elf meat gives sleep resistance.  So, the  pointy-eared freaks are good for one thing.

There are other, more exotic, meals.  Eating Dragon meat will convey the appropriate fire, cold or electrical resistance, or disintegration resistance.  Eating Giant meat will increase strength.  Eating Mind Flayer meat may increase intelligence.  Eating a leprechaun gives teleportitis.

I would give the resistances a 24 hour duration or until the end of the next long rest.  For ability increases, the meat would need proper preparation, so the PC's need to find just the right recipe, but I would let the increase be permanent.  Of course the recipes need other very rare and dangerous to obtain spices and such.

Oh for Crom's sake, Pundy wrote a whole booklet about this.  Spend three bucks.

Both Dark Albion and Lion & Dragon have large chapters dedicated to herbalism and poisons, most of these aren't mushrooms as such, but they'd probably be up your alley.

Well, I never wrote one specifically about Mushrooms, but I did write (as I mentioned above) a big chapter on Herbalism and poisons which appears in both Dark Albion and Lion & Dragon.

I also wrote Dungeonchef (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/223013/RPGPundit-Presents-1-DungeonChef), which has similar stuff about weird effects from eating creatures. It costs $2.99

AND, I wrote "Pipes and Pipeweed (http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/225912/RPGPundit-Presents-6-Pipes--Pipeweed)", which is about weird/magical tobacco, but you could very easily change that to weird/magical mushrooms that you eat instead of smoke.  It costs $1.99.

I rather liked this take on it:

DungeonChef was what I had in mind.  Anybody who can't adapt that for mushrooms should give up on running games.

I actually bought those when they came out.

It's just with this I was hoping to apply real life mushrooms to it but I don't do much outdoors stuff. But I know there's a whole hobby around hunting mushrooms and knowing all their specifics. The death cap!

Ohh, that's different.  Sorry.

If there are forums for RPGs, there are probably forums for mushroom hunters, and they probably have whole sections on toxic mushrooms.  That might be a good place to start.

Deathcap mushroom is one of the poisons listed in L&D and Dark Albion.
