There appears to be a project for a generic Cortex + book that prospective game designers can, eventually, use and license for their own ends. Does anyone know more about this, with respect to the licensing part?

Yes, it was part of the recent Corex+ Kickstarter - the last stretch goal (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1116133034/margaret-weis-productions-cortex-plus-hackers-guid/posts). They haven't started on the terms of the license yet, but intend to model it on the one for Savage Worlds.
Nuts.
I don't like the sound of that.
A couple of people have commented that - how come?
(I'm not affiliated with MWP, just interested)
It's a simple system. Eminently 'hackable' as the younglings like to say.
My feeling, to be blunt and probably quite selfish, is...why not just make it free? Is there much money in licensing? Do people want their books covered in logos and materials that, while reaosnable, detract from the ambience? That's one of my major problems with Savage Worlds: it's great if you want a wild west pulpy setting, but if not you still get smiling jack and the 'I gotz Savaged' vibe all over your work.

... I don't think you understand how the Savage Worlds licensing works.
The only thing you HAVE to do for fan materials is put the Savage Fan logo on the cover and put the short little license notice somewhere noticeable. It even MENTIONS you can denote wild cards using any symbol you want OR that you can use Smiling Jack.
The for publication one just requires the Savage world's official licensed product logo and the notice and permission from Pinnacle.
Sooo. yeah, I have no idea what you are talking about. OH NO ONE LOGO ON THE COVER AND A SHORT LICENSING NOTICE!
Also: The Savage Worlds licensing is free. They just require permission because they want to make sure people are putting out a quality product.

That's fine. But I don't really want to use SW. I have no issue with it, it's just not what I want to use. Pinnacle can do what they like, that's not an issue. If they want to make it free, or charge, or this or that, then good luck to them.
The Emperor's point was that all the license entails is a logo and a paragraph, no costs.
The Cortex+ license will be similar; how will that limit what you are wanting to do with it?

Do you always miss the point of what people are telling you in some vain attempt to not look like an idiot? (Hint: It makes you look even more like an idiot)
You were the one to say that a Savage Worlds like license was bad for X reasons, I pointed out that absolutely nothing in your list of X reasons was true.
"I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY DO I'M NOT INTERESTED IN THEM"
You were the one who brought up what they were doing as bad for reasons that aren't even true, you moron.

I brought up savage worlds because the cortex + is going to be based on it.

I have no interest in using SW.
Only the license will be similar. The game system is completely different.
Quote from: Ghost Whistler;627183I brought up savage worlds because the cortex + is going to be based on it.
Yes, yes you did. Then you explained that it would be bad to base it on that because the Savage Worlds License has X and Y and Z. And I told you all of those things were incorrect about the Savage Worlds license. Then you say "well it doesn't matter what they do." Yes it does, because what they do is what we are being told the Cortex+ licensing will be based on. Are you following are are you to dim to catch up and admit that you were wrong.
Now that we've circled our way all the way through your idiocy, how about you come up with a real reason based on reality that basing the license on the Savage Worlds license actually affects anything.

1) Savage Worlds doesn't even use Smiling Jack anymore, and has never required their licensees to use Smiling Jack.
2) It is free. And no, being forced to put a Cortex+ logo on your book is not the same as charging you to use the system.
3) Cortex+ is still Cortex+. The system is in no more like Savage Worlds than it was before the Kickstarter.
4) I do not remotely understand why anyone would want to use Savage Worlds as the game system for their book, but want to avoid having a "Savage Worlds vibe" in their work.
I don't want to use SW. I really don't understand why that's hard to grok. I've no desire to use the system and would only want to change it radically if I did. If other people want to use it, good luck to them. It's existence doesn't offend me.

Ghost-Whistler, none of these things you say here are true.
Since it's the case that none of these things are true, what is your problem with MWP using the SW license as a business model to emulate?

As i've made clear: i don't have a problem with it. They can do as they please, it's their game it's their business.

No one, ever, has said ANYTHING about you using Savage Worlds. I have no idea why THAT'S so hard for YOU to understand.
All we have said is that the TERMS of the Cortex+ license are being based off of the TERMS of the Savage Worlds license. The SYSTEM is still not, in anyway way, Savage Worlds.
Quote from: Tommy Brownell;627269The SYSTEM is still not, in anyway way, Savage Worlds.
I don't know why you are saying this. of course it's not. I didn't say Cortex + was like SW. They are two fundamentally different systems.
What did I just read?
Quote from: Eisenmann;627310What did I just read?
i've no idea, this thread stopped making sense ages ago. I've absolutely no idea why people think that I said Cortex + has the same rules as SW.
And until the C+ license is finished, and i guess that will be when there hack book comes out, we won't know specifically how it works, nor be able to use it.

Oh for the love of fucking god.
Here is the thread for you you moron:
You: Hey I heard C+ licensing is happening.
Dude 1: Yeah they said it would be handled similarly to the SW license.
You: That sucks.
Dude 1: Why would that suck?
You: BECAUSE IT SHOULD BE FREE, AND I DON'T WANT TO HAVE A TON OF IMAGES AND SHIT REQUIRED IN MY WORK.
Dude 2: Uh, dude, the SW license is nothing like that. It is free, and it doesn't require you to use a lot of images and shit.
You: I DON'T CARE WHAT THEY DO I DON'T WANT TO USE SW.
Dude 2: Look, moron, you want to know about the C+ license, MWP said it would be handled similarly to the SW license. Therefore, we explained the SW license because that would be the best way to get an idea of what the C+ license will be.
You; BUT I DON'T WANT TO USE SW.
Everyone: NO ONE SAID YOU HAD TO, WE ARE JUST EXPLAINING THE SW LICENSE BECAUSE MWP SAID THAT IT WOULD BE A SIMILAR FUCKING LICENSE AND YOU SEEM TO NOT UNDERSTAND THE SW LICENSE AT ALL.
You: WHY CAN'T PEOPLE UNDERSTAND I DON'T WANT TO USE SW.
Holy shit man, how in fucking gods name can you NOT GET HOW FUCKING STUPID YOU ARE.
Quote from: Ghost Whistler;627183I brought up savage worlds because the cortex + is going to be based on it.

Yes, the license. How is that not clear; that's the title of the thread?!?

what part of this isn't clear. The thread is about the licensing arrangement. How on earth is that not clear to you? How on fucking earth do you read from that that I think savage worlds uses the same rules as Cortex? They are two totally different systems ffs. The only trolling here is you.

I'm going to try to help you here - and i'm sure you're going to take it as an attack or something. You suck at communicating what you mean. Somewhere between the thought in your head and what you write on the screen bits go missing.
People on this thread have been trying to help you and you've gone all over the shop. People thought you thought Cortex + and SW used the same rules because you said it. Now, you obviously meant that they're going to use a similar licensing agreement, but due to the vagaries of thread drift, by the time you said -
"brought up savage worlds because the cortex + is going to be based on it." it wasn't clear that you meant the license or the bloody game - thread fucking title or not.
When people obviously didn't add up the dots missing from your brain to the keyboard, instead of saying "Let me clarify, i mean ....", you did your usual "No, i didn't say that." and dug your heels in.
You've derailed your own thread because you're unable to communicate clearly and when the opportunity arised to clarify your meaning you didn't take it.
There, some friendly advice to help you in future. If your meaning hasn't translated to other posters, clarify it and move on.
No need to thank me.

Perhaps not presuming how i might react then would have been better. Especially as you have already attacked me, unprovoked, in this thread.
QuoteYou suck at communicating what you mean. Somewhere between the thought in your head and what you write on the screen bits go missing.
No, I simply left out, quite accidentally, the word license from that quote you made above.
That doesn't give people license to resort to unprovoked abuse, nor does it allow them to claim the moral high ground when being abusive.
Quite honestly, the quote doesn'tsay 'rules' either and given that you really should be able to infer from context I dion't think people have the right to then resort to unprovoked nastiness.
If you can't understand what I meant in a thread specifically about and entitled 'cortex + licensing' then you aren't really in a position to lecture me - especially when you adopt a patronisingtone in so doing after previously insulting me.
Clearly you don't like what I have to say. That's fine; it's unfortunate, but that's fine. I wouldsuggest then using the ignore function.
QuoteNo need to thank me.
Indeed.

You're the one that took a quote that left out theword license, and then inferred that word should be something entirely different, despite the context. What were you hoping to achieve with that?
