This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Some old game, I think it was in the traveller line, had the "recognition handle' idea where you could list a famous person and/or a role they played as a way to envision your character.

Well, does anyone here use this now? I'd hate to have a whole party made of of "Looks like Tom Cruise/Angelina Jolie" types, but there are some people I've based character discriptions on.

My first professor tanhauser in Mforce looked like Anthony Hopkins in "Hannibal" while later Professor Tanhausers looked like Micheal McManus from "Lexx".

I might do one looking like a 30 year old Keith Olbermann from "Countdown" soon as I like him and think he looks fairly intelligent.

I like this idea.  It helps people stay in character.  If they picture the person, they can see their mannerisms/attitudes and emulate them.  I've used this idea in an article.

Hannibal from A-Team: Commander with light fun side.  Indulge your team.  Do what needs to get done knowing that you will have to face the consequences (hunted by GOV).

I do this all the time, particularly with actors that tend to play the same type of person (Brian Glover runs the Pie and Mash shop in our Feng Shui campaign)

On the other hand, my players recently had to be convinced not to throw Paris Hilton out of a helicopter as there was no actual in-game reason for them to do it

I don't like using actors/actresses because none of my PC's ever really look like such people in my head. (Why I tend to sketch my own heroes...comes much closer that way.)

For modern games, I tend to grab pictures off the internet to make the character more concrete.  I usually stay away from famous people because they have too much baggage.  I google using a few words describing the person and see what I get.  It often helps inspire character creation.

Verbal description has never been my strong suit, and I really don't know my celebrities. So no. I do the drawing thing instead.

Browse IMDB for lesser known actors. Or take scans from magazines.

Sosthenes

The German DSA RPG had some early illustrations where it was easy to see that the artist copied the faces from actors. Robert Mitchum as a Viking chieftain, Val Kilmer as the high priest of the death god...

As a one-time joke it's alright, but used too often it just made the general plagiaristic attitude of the designers too obvious.
