This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

CGL going... down? WTH?

I'm not going to fully endorse Frank's post and theories because of past issues he's had with CGL. Other than that... yes, money is missing and people have resigned.

The Eclipse Phase folks had more to say:

Quote from: Rob Boyle @ Eclipse Phase forumI am waiting to see what Catalyst has to say before I make a public post. In the meantime, it's fair to note that the Operations Manager, Accountant/Office Manager, and Adam Jury (layout ninja) have all resigned. Catalyst didn't actually employ me, so I can't resign, but I will no longer be freelancing for them.

Posthuman Studios is committed to continuing Eclipse Phase, though exactly how that will play out we can't say just yet. I also can't say just yet how this will affect the release schedule. We're working on it. As quoted on our twitter feed, publishers are like morphs, you can always resleeve if necessary.

and:

Quote from: Jack Graham @ Eclipse Phase forumLike Rob said, we'll maintain, however the chips fall.

Also please note that Trollman's post... well, you oughta see an inappropriate amount of gleefulness in it if you read between the lines. Two well beloved game franchises are at stake (and I don't mean ours), so I'm not sure what's up with the chum-in-the-shark-tank tone. If it's proven true, it's awful. In the mean time, he & everyone else need to relax.

Future of Eclipse Phase? I'm still knocking out verbiage for a book that was slated to come out two books after Sunward, and I'll be damned if it doesn't see the light of day. I also know I'm not the only one on the core crew of writers who feels that way.

Take that for what it's worth.

That's the horrible thing, isn't it? That our hobby is full of people, just like the rest of life is.
"Meh."

All of the numbers quoted -- both dollars and print run numbers -- seem off by an order of magnitude, if not two orders of magnitude:

QuoteReliable sources put this figure at roughly $850,000. Which sounds like a lot, and it is. It is roughly 40% of Catalyst's entire sales for last year, missing over a three year period. . . .  A print run of say, 50,000 books (like the print run of Runner Havens)
Their 2009 sales were really $2.125M. Really?

Warthur

Interesting to note that the person who actually appeared to take this money isn't actually amongst the people resigning.

That could mean anything. But it does at least give the impression that the guy's a charmer who actually convinced most of the other owners to keep him on, and the employees who quit basically said "Wait, you're keeping him around after he's done this? Fuck that."
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

"Thieves and assholes" is, perhaps, a little harsh.  The better assessment, I'd say, is that RPGers are just as incompetent at running a business as anyone in any other sector of the population.  The restaurant analogy really is one of the best I've come across.

"Incompetent" people don't pay "freelancers" to build an addition to their house, nor do they use company credit cards for trips to Europe and Christmas gifts (Decipher), or just flat out take the money (Palladium). Thieves and assholes do.

But incompetent people run businesses without the sort of structure and oversight that prevents, or at least inhibits, thieves and assholes from acting with impunity.

Wait, wait, wait! What about the future Shadowrun setting?

Shit, you're right.  After all these years, the Shadowrun setting is almost the present.

What I'd really like to see is a post-apocalyptic Shadowrun: Return of the Horrors. But since they already publish Cthulhutech, I figure they've got their post-apocalyptic eldricht abominations vs. super-tech bases covered.

Ah well. Here's hoping that CGL (or failing that, the games themselves) pull through.

No. Didn't they have an upcoming game that was basically Shadowrun in the far future? Can't remember the name of it now...

Quote from: Nicephorus;367796That's a good analogy.  Many game companies are started by gamers who underestimate the business side of things.  Many would be restaurant owners think that they can cook but don't realize how hard it is to run a resaurant.  A quarter of restaurants die the first year and 3/5s within 3 years.  Most game companies have staffs smaller than that of a restaurant.
And most people will agree when you can cook a good steak, or not.
RPG books? Lot more hit and miss.
But RPG's are like most small businesses; run by people with good intentions, but often horrible managerial practices.

It is exceedingly common in any small business in my experience, for the owners to feel their position entitles them to using the business as their personal piggy bank.  Maybe unethical, but it's everywhere, and in a private firm, well, it IS their money.

It sounds like one of their owners was still under that impression, but the business itself had simply grown too much and become too interconnected with other businesses and investors for such sloppy accounting to continue, and had gotten a little greedy in the face of all that money.

It happens every day.  I think "thieves and assholes" is a little bit overboard.  That's just how business works, dude.
