Title: Castles and Crusades - Improving Weapon Specialization
Post by: jgants on April 05, 2007, 10:38:39 AM
Since Calithena asked for some actual game-type content, here's my contribution:

I was thinking of a way to make weapon specialization a little more interesting for fighter characters in C&C.  Inspired by the weapon mastery rules in BD&D, I came up with the idea of adding an extra ability to a weapon, based on its weapon class, for people who specialize in it.

I haven't covered every weapon, but here's what I have so far.  Tell me what you think:

Axe (Battle, Hand, Two-Handed): Axe weapons can be used to make wipe, sweeping attacks.  If an axe attack reduces a target's HP to 0 or less, the fighter can make a free follow-up attack at an adjacent target, as long as he doesn't have to move to reach them.

Bow (Short, Long, Crossbow): Bow specialists have very good depth perception.  Increase weapon range by 50%.

Club (Club, Hammer, Mace): The concussive blow of a heavy blunt weapon can disable opponents.  A critical hit will knock out/stun an opponent for 1d10 rounds in they have HD equal to or less than 1/4 of the fighter's level (rounded up).

Dagger: Daggers can be used to make very quick, very precise cuts at vital areas.  Critical hit damage is tripled.

Flail: Flails are designed to move around defenses.  Ignore a target's AC bonus from using a shield.

Lance: Lances are built for heavy charge attacks.  Double damage done on a charge attack (when mounted), or triple on a critical hit with a charge.

Pick: Picks are designed to tear away at enemy armor.  A critical hit with a pick will decrease a target's armor AC bonus by 1.

Polearm (var): Polearms include a blade and a hook.  If an attack misses, make a second attack at -4.  If the second attack hits, the target takes the minimum damage from the weapon and is knocked prone.

Spear (Spear, Long Spear, Pike): Spears are designed to repel enemy charges.  Any charge attack that is not a flank attack can be set against as a reaction.  Make an attack roll before the charger's attack roll.  If the spear attack succeeds, the charger takes double damage (or triple, on a critical) and the charge attack automatically fails.

Staff: Staves are designed for reach and quick movement.  A staff can be used to make a trip attack.  If the attack succeeds, the target takes minimum damage and is knocked prone.  On a critical hit, the fighter may make a free follow-up attack with the staff on the prone target.

Sword (var): Swords are designed for parrying as well as attacking.  Add +1 to the character's AC when using a sword in battle.

Whip: A whip can be used to make a grapple attack.

Dude, that's awesome!

All of them are cool of course, but the number one complaint I'm getting form my players (the fighter, anyway) is that there is rarely an opportunity to use combat dominance since there aren't many 1HD creatures in the Gygaxian dungeon I'm using.

This would totally solve the problem!

To give credit where credit is due, the mechanics for that one are just the Cleave feat from D&D 3.X.  I just thought it would work well for the axe special ability.

Wow, it's been a long time since I read a d20 game.

Now that's using the ol' noodle!  Further proof of C&C's flexibility.
