Quote from: FraserRonaldAnd while not a fantasy movie, my favourite FRPG inspiration movie is 13 Warriors. The group even gets a job while in a bar! Sort of. . .

It's 'The 13th Warrior', ahh crap now I have to watch it again and read another Gemmell.

Um, I know you're all caught up with AutoAssault and DDO and all, but you're a little late with the scoop. A couple of other people caught my goof. But thanks for trying.

DDO is consuming me, AutoAssault is the suck and only took away several hours that I could have spent on DDO.  We know play at the dining table as to circumvent the problems of the cursed cushion.

Legend...

Cheesey as hell but the music is timeless (surrealism is seldom dated) and the villain?  Darkness scared the hell outta me.

I recently picked up a special collector's edition that didn't use Tangerine Dream for the music track and I HATE it... it sucks.  The music from the original is the best.

That being said - I wonder if someone could remaster Ladyhawke with cool music?  I would pay for that.

Quote from: KnightcrawlerSo in the vein of the superhero thread.  What do you think were some of the best fantasy/sword & sorcery movies.  Both live action and animated.  Here's what I've thought of so far.

The second D&D movie, Wrath of the Dragon God, is better than the first D&D movie and as good as Hawk the Slayer, Bestmaster (I love the joke that HBO used to stand for "Hey, Beastmaster's On!"), and The Sword and Sorcerer, in my opinion.  Willow would have worked better as a trilogy like Star Wars but was too rushed and fluffy as a single movie (not horrible but not as good as it could have been).

When I saw Ralph Bakshi's Frank Frazetta inspired Fire and Ice animated movie in the 1980s, I didn't like it.  But after seeing the documentary Frazetta: Painting with Fire and watching it again recently, I have a better appeciation for what they were trying to do and thought it was decent.  It's certainly sword and sorcery.

The Sorpion King was also a pretty good recent sword and sorcery fantasy movie.  While Kull the Conquerer had it's moments, it's ultimate a "sword and sorcery heartbreaker" movie, along with Red Sonja, Conan the Destroyer, Dungeons and Dragons, and Krull -- movies that had a decent budget and cast but horrible plot and production staff that didn't "get it".

For me, LoTR trilogy is the big one.

After that, Ladyhawke, Conan, Princess Bride, and Excaliber are pretty high up the list.

I've also always been fond of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, and Disney's Alladin.

I know I've seen, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was about. It was animated, wasn't it? Kinda like Fire & Ice...

Oh yeah, the sci-fi movie. Ah, post-apocolyptic....close enough :)

Oh God.  Isn't that the Ralph Bakshi animated film in a post-apocolyptic setting where the evil people are all Nazis (Nazi orcs, etc.)?  (The evil wizard even shows Nazi films to his minions iirc.)
:nazi:
Ugh.  That film makes me feel ill just thinking about it.

I have to say that I quite like the 'extended DVD' version of Jackson's LotR trilogy.

I also recently saw the original Conan film again (I hadn't seen it for 12+ years).  It was surprisingly decent.  And the music was great.  I'm tempted to pick up the soundtrack.

'The 13th Warrior' and 'Willow' were solid.

Maddman

Quote from: KnightcrawlerI completely agree on the music from the movie being extremely cheesy.  But there aren't many 80's movies that have stood up that well to time, especially in the music department.

Dude sometimes the cheesy 80s music really adds to the awesomeness of the the movie.  Like the Karate Kid in the big fight at the end when Daniel's in the tournament against the Kobra Kai and the Sensei is all like "Sweep the leg" so the dude hurts Daniel's leg and they think he's gonna have to quit but then Mr Myagi does that thing where he rubs his hands together and fixes his leg and then Daniel goes out and does the Crane Technique and kicks the dude right in the face and the music's going You're the best, around!  No one's gonna evar keep ya down and you're goin FUCK YES DANIEL KICK HIS ASS!  YEAH!

It really works then.
I have a theory, it could be witches, some evil witches!
Which is ridiculous \'cause witches they were persecuted Wicca good and love the earth and women power and I'll be over here.

Quote from: el-remmenThen again, I am a stickler, as much as I love the story of Ladyhawke, I can never watch it again because the music is so. ..  I was gonna say horrible - but maybe it isn't horrible - it is just so jarring for the setting that I literally cannot sit through 10 minutes of the film anymore.
I have been watching movies from just about every decade from the '30s on in the past year or so.  (I love Netflix!)  Amongst them have been many '80s movies.  Ladyhawke has THE worst music of any of them -- and not by any small margin.  The music sucks so much ass it's just pathetic.

While the story was decent, I won't watch it again.  And we even have the VHS of it.  I just won't put up with that music again.

The Good Assyrian

I gotta back up the suggestions for Conan (first one only) and 13th Warrior as some of the best Sword & Sorcery films.  To these I have to add the "Den of Earth" portion of Heavy Metal.  I know, I know, it is technically science fiction...but for some reason it has always captured what I think S&S should feel and look like.

I recommend a combo of the soundtracks of Conan the Barbarian and the Den of Earth portions of Heavy Metal (the unofficial version of the soundtrack, that is) to get you in the mood for some wizard slaying.

Don't get me wrong I love 13th Warrior but I don't really think it can qualify as Sword and Sorcery.  It's just to lacking on the Sorcery/Fantasy aspect to much.
