So in the vein of the superhero thread.  What do you think were some of the best fantasy/sword & sorcery movies.  Both live action and animated.  Here's what I've thought of so far.

  • Conan
  • Dragonheart
  • Dragonslayer
  • Lord of the Rings (both versions)
  • The Hobbit
  • Willow

A particular favorite of mine has always been Willow. Personally, I find it less cheesy than most fantasy, and it's got hobbits!

Crap I knew I was forgetting at least one.  Yeah I like that movie too.

Unfortunatly neither Chris Claremont nor George Lucas could write their way out of a paper bag (much less a plot hole), and so the attempt to capitalize on my childhood by writing a trilogy of novels has failed spectacularly.

The only one I'd add to that list is Disney's Sword in the Stone.  Sure it's Disney but the wizard battle is the king.
AccidentalSurvivors.com : The blood will put out the fire.

Scarbonac

Excalibur
Hawk the Slayer
Dragonslayer
Beastmaster
Sword and the Sorcerer
Hundra

Honorable Mention:

Dragonheart
LotR
Willow
Magic Sword
Anything with titties
Ersatz Buck Rogers AND Ersatz Han Solo

There are people that actually like Dragonheart?  :p

True, true.  And the hot redhead chick to.  But yes I liked Dragonheart.  Sure it was pretty much generic fantasy but I enjoyed it, it was a popcorn movie.  :D

The Chronical's of Riddick

Sure it is a sci-fi setting but the movie is a classic Conan story.
  1. A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
   2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
   3. A robot must protect its own existence, as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Then again, I am a stickler, as much as I love the story of Ladyhawke, I can never watch it again because the music is so. ..  I was gonna say horrible - but maybe it isn't horrible - it is just so jarring for the setting that I literally cannot sit through 10 minutes of the film anymore.

I completely agree on the music from the movie being extremely cheesy.  But there aren't many 80's movies that have stood up that well to time, especially in the music department.

Ladyhawke is still one of my favorite movies of all time though.

Ladyhawke is an excellent fantasy movie, and has a great story and great acting as well, but like the Ultimate Nullifier said, the music kills it. I still watch it occassionally, but I'd watch it more with a real soundtrack.

The Best Fantasy Movie? I would have to say LotR: tFotR. Not the other two, which--in my opinion--were flawed. For everything one needs in a fantasy movie--great story-telling, acting, action and the fantastic--tFotR had it all.

And while not a fantasy movie, my favourite FRPG inspiration movie is 13th Warrior. The group even gets a job while in a bar! Sort of. . .

I don't remember the music in Ladyhawke being all that noteworthy. Maybe I was distracted by Rutger Hauer though. ;)

My favorites have all been mentioned, I think... Ladyhawke, Excalibur, Dragonslayer, Conan the Barbarian.

The LotR trilogy I almost consider in a completely different league, I don't know if it's because I'm looking back fondly on the older movies or what.

Quote from: Harry JoyAre you refering to The 13th Warrior? If you are, the Banderas char was a Major inspiration for the character I am running now. I admitted as much to some fellow players a week or so ago, and they seem to have difficulty discerning the difference between "inspiration" and "complete rip-off". I almost wish I hadn't mentioned it.

Yes, I had meant "13th Warrior." My bad. I'm still not going to stop smoking crack, so there!

But, yeah, I can understand the inspiration. I actually made a bard/fighter modelled on Herger. A friend of mine also ran a one-shot based on the end of the movie (the final confrontation). Good times.
