This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Basic roleplaying games.

I was wondering how many of you own or play any basic roleplaying system games ( Runequest/Call of Cthulhu/Stormbringer,etc )?
What do you think of Chaosium's part in developing and publishing them?
What would you like to see in the future, as far as BRP type games go?

So atheists have been abused, treated badly by clergy or they\'re stupid.They\'re just being trendy because they can\'t understand The God Delusion because they don\'t have the education, plus they\'re just pretending to be atheists anyway. Pundit you\'re the one with a problem, terminal stupidity.

It's my core system, I own tons of them.

I think the system has done very well despite Chaosium's best efforts to kill it.

Deluxe BRP baby, hopefully this year.  Otherwise a good modern day BRP game and perhaps a new baseline sf variant.

I don't play any, no. But it gets a ton of respect from many of my old friends.
I don't have much left of my collection except CoC and Pendragon (if that counts). The last games of CoC I ran used Story Engine.

I am nonetheless considering Deluxe BRP as a sort of reference for when I welcome old-timers home. Personally, I have moved on but it's a solid system, even if it shows its age.

To which I draw your attention to Translight from ComStar Games.  It gives me hope that someone will fully realise the conversion notes I started 17 years ago to convert the Ringworld rules to the Traveller setting.  The only potential pitfall I foresee is editing. I recently bought ComStar's Traveller 1248 sourcebook. I've really been enjoying the general content, but the writing itself was in desperate need of a principled and stringent editor -- lots of purple prose and personal bias bleeds through regularly.

If deluxe BRP isn't filled with any stupidities, if it plays like BRP (and not specifically like Runequest or Elric, or CoC), then it should be really awesome. Otherwise, it will be yet another waste of time by Chaosium.

Le sigh.  Yeah, though I personally think that they only way they can manage to make a true waste of time of it is to never actually release the damned thing (which is not beyond the realm of possibility).

On the bright side of things, the basic RuneQuest system, derived from BRP, has been released on the OGL, which allows third parties (like ComStar, mentioned above) to develop and release their own variants.  Actually, I'm not sure how bright this is, as it suggests some potentially lethal attrition to Chaosium's efforts*.  Yeah, I still don't understand that licensing-of-the-RQ-system-but-technically-not-BRP-debacle.

[*Edit: Yes, I understand that it was not Chaosium that released the RQ mechanics via OGL, which is what makes it all so very weird and potentially depressing.]

Translight is aiming to be a baseline SF BRP-derived game. If you're interested in more I suggest applying for the playtest. See this thread for more details.

1248 was originally started & the main playtest was conducted at QLI's Moot with several delays before publication and MJD is, well, MJD (referring to writing style), so I'm not suprised on the final product, IMO rushed*. Translight is fully Avenger/Comstar development so hopefully it'll be better edited.

Note on bias: I am just a playtester & consumer though I do know some of the Avenger freelancers through online games and related. My bias re: 1248 is partially due to prepaying a 1248 preorder through QLI (who never released it) and all that entails.

* Volume 1's cover layout, the use of cheap clipart originally from the '80s RPG Starlancer (which don't fit either the setting or Bryan Gibson's art IMO) and the use of an earlier collapse system in particular

Nicephorus

On the whole, it's good but not great.  Most of the mechanics are simple but not particularly inspiring (except system specific stuff in CoC and Pendragon).  If someone had a good idea and wanted to run it with BRP, the system wouldn't be a minus in me wanting to play.

Can I ask how BRP "shows its age"?:)

dsfd re 34rewfe 32

I've used nothing but in 23 years and countless settings. Let me rephrase that: I've used lots of other systems, but it always comes back to RQ.

It doesn't come in the form of a gadzillion full-colour hardcover splatbooks. Although MRQ is in the process of rectifying that. :greedy:

I don't want to slag off MJD, but I'm not impressed with Translight at this stage. I stopped playtesting (well, editing) at Chapter 2, because I found myself basically re-writing whole sections of the rules. I think I'll wait out one or two iterations before getiing involved again.

On the flip-side of things, what are the chances that your input might help set the course for later iterations at an early stage?  Or is that why you figure you'll sit this one out?

I have RQ3, Stormbringer 5th and Call of Cthulhu.  I like what I've read of the game, but outside of a few pickup CoC sessions, I'm not really familiar with how the system works in play.
For fuck\'s sake, these are games, people.

And no one gives a fuck about your ignore list.
