Title: Asian Name List
Post by: blakkie on October 22, 2006, 04:14:31 PM
Like those large list of fantasy names, but centering on far east Asian.

Looking for a list of Asian names. I've found "convert your name" and single random given name type sites. But I'm looking for something that'll give me a list of hundred or so. Chinese (both coastal and inland including Mongolia etc.) is main aim, but S. Korean, Phillipine, Polynesia, Vietnam, and even Japan is good.

Coverage of Indian penisula considered a plus.

I own two products that do this.  One is the "Everyone Everywhere list" by Magic and Tactics unlimited.  It has all the lists of names you have listed, and many more all listed by 100s so they can be easily rolled randomly.  Unfortunately, the company is gone, the website down and the book hard to find.

BUT, I also have the Extraordinary Book of Names (http://www.trolllord.com/newsite/gygax/3004.html).  This one has the names listed in simple alphabetical order, and hass over 100,000 names for people places and things.  It also has all the cultures you've named and many more.

Here's a nifty online utility, for Chinese names, done for Weapons of the Gods, the Nuwa Hundred Names! (http://wotg.raventower.com/)

I did some asian, Chinese and Japanese name tables for Inspiration Pad Pro (http://www.nbos.com/products/ipad/ipad.htm) free table program which I highly recommend. There is a V2.0 beta but I'm not sure if my tables work with that yet.

I'll attach the tables as a zip below. If you don't want to use the program (you should use it however) the tables are just plain text so you can read it yourself.

Okay I would attach them as a zip extect it doesn't seem to be working (how can a 13Kb exceed the quota (95Mb) by 14 Mb?). I'll find some other way to share them.

Luckly I have them on my website. Here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.maple/downloads/Tables.zip) you've got the insanity tables for CoC d20 there as a bonus.

You also have Spanish, French and other Western name tables there as well.

First off, the Nuwa Hundred Names page is the best name page in the fucking galaxy.

Seriously:
Gigantic Milk Guo Mi-yuan
Weeping Thumb Huai Liangde
Arrogant Burn Gan Sang-wa
Moaning Hat Shen Gschu
This shit is AWESOME.

If you can hold on for a bit, a couple guys are still working on the Story Games Names Project, basically a soon-to-be-released book that you can carry to games and basically randomly generate fitting names for almost any genre of game (I don't think anyone had Vietnamese, though, unfortunately). All names come in lists of 20 (often, like, "3 lists of 20 male names; 3 lists of 20 female names; 2 lists of 20 surnames", etc) so you can randomly generate names with a d20 on the fly if needed. http://www.story-games.com/forums/comments.php?DiscussionID=959 (http://www.story-games.com/forums/comments.php?DiscussionID=959) . The project is "done" contentwise, but it'll still be another month or three until the final product, a cheapass print-on-demand book, will be available.

I put together a Japanese section that I'm particularly proud of (the latest version is not online unfortunately), which has a huge amount of modern names, Sengoku/Edo era names (split into Commoner, Royalty and Samurai/Bushi), and even took it up a notch to old-school with Heian-Era (700-900 AD) era family names and first names for men, titles for women. It also included things like "cool nicknames", "stuff you could buy in a tavern" and "stuff that you might find in a vending machine", just for that cool background info to add color. A lot of folks added this kind of color thing (like food and clothing) to spruce up games without having to run to Wikipedia and the like in the middle of a session. Hopefully it'll be out before the end of the year.

If that was to me, yep, though this thread is full of cool links. :turban: That online Traveller campaign was full of Cowboy Bebop, Firefly, Irish, Asian, and Russian influences, so I got crash a course in Mandarin Chinese. But Vilani and other Traveller word generators are off topic (and I don't have links for all of that :o ).

Any idea on a price for the book? TLG's Book of Names was too $$$ to me for a book of names, (for retail price free net stuff worked fine enough)

It's going to be approximately Exactly The Price to Print the Book at Cost and Ship it, plus $2. Those extra $2 are going to a globally recognized charity.

I have actually found the price well worth it at the table.  I've always been good with names, but sometimes I have an off day where "Chuck" and "Jimmy" were apparently very popular names...

I think any book of names is most likely worth the price for me.  YMMV of course.  Andy K, your book sounds good, although I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff, so I'll most likely buy one.  Be sure to tell us when it's available, as I've never been to story games.

I admit I do like my pdf of 2 of the Gygaxian series (aka the big book of lists) for similar reasons. :p Granted I got it during a sale.

Only Eight Months Later! :D

I got my copy in the mail today, and it's good all around. The Japanese section turned out as I'd hoped. There's also Korean, Mongolian, North Indian Hindu, Thai, Filipino, Chinese, Maori, and a few other asian ones. Tons of other name sets, divided into Fantasy, Historical, Modern, and Humerous.

Anyway, I didn't want to plug it until I got my own and could verify that it's worth $11.  It's TOTALLY worth $11, and I'm using it right now (mostly American, Polish, Russian and German) to create some NPC organizations for a supers game I'm running on Wednesday loosely based on the Night Watch series.

Assuming you don't care about what the characters are, here's a table of all the possible syllables in Mandarin. There aren't that many.

I use the Behind the Name, Random Name Generator (http://www.behindthename.com/random/) for most of my games. It does a good job of covering everything.

That is, without a doubt, the Bee's Knees.

Thanks for that.
