A few weeks back I got a copy of Legends of Anglerre. Really enjoyed reading it and in the back of my mind I've been thinking about doing a Arabian Nights fantasy roleplaying game for Fate. This is still very preliminary, really just a lot of thoughts in my head and a few notes scribbled down.
I've done an okay version of this genre for Basic Roleplaying, but I was never fully happy with the result and I think Fate might give me the cinematic effect I'm looking for.
One of the ideas I'm thinking about is introducing a third stress track to the damage system. Right now you have physical stress (damage to the body) and composure stress (damage to the psyche/social aspects).
I was thinking of adding a magic stress track. Magic users in the game would be in danger of accumulating magic stress during catastrophic spell failure (either through their own incompetence or through interruptions from outside forces), exercising extremely powerful magic, and through the use of darker magics (necromancy or sorcery).
When the stress bar fills up Magicians would be unconscious. Magicians could forestall this by taking consequences which would remove some of the accumulated stress, much like it does for physical and composure stress. However the consequences would be more metaphysical in nature. For example a minor consequence might be the magician gaining some eerie effect, like the loss of his shadow, or his reflection might not show in mirrors or water. A more serious consequence might be the inability to light a normal fire, such a torch or campfire. Major consequences might be the withering of a limb or the limb taking on a bestial appearance. Consequences could eventually be righted, usually through the magician spending time recovering, much like healing up from a physical injury.
I wanted to capture the dangerous and unpredictable nature of magic in the Arabian Nights. So, thoughts?
I read the title of this thread as 'Arabian Nights Hate Fuck.'
Though I'm a huge fan of the Arabian Nights, I know nothing about FATE, so as far as the rules go, I can't be any help. The idea that magic should be tricky and dangerous always appeals to me, and it certainly fits the genre.

Well, yeah, that would certainly have gotten people's attention. :)

Fucken' scooped. So much so that I literally had nothing else to say. Thank you from robbing me of my only purpose, my only raison d'etre in this thread, Black Vulmea. I shall now go commit internet suicide for lack of reason to go on.
To repeat: Arabian Nights Hate Fuck.
Is it impossible to write 'Fate Hack' without that oddity cropping up, or does the arabian nights actually make it easier to read it so? Men of Science, where are we when you need us to answer these burning questions? Stop telling me that men stare at tits, we already know that... this is the real burning question of our age.
Oh...
um...
Good luck with your hate fuck?
I don't grok FATE but would really enjoy an Arabian Nights RPG. The GURPS sourcebook was pretty good but should have been longer.

Yeah, this pretty much nails it for me, too. I'm not into FATE, but I dig the Arabian nights vibe. I haven't seen the GURPS sourcebook, but my experience with those is that they're often great resources, even if you don't play GURPS.
It is something that is still under-represented in RPG settings. Of course, you could say that technically, most non-European historical cultures are under-represented.
