Title: Anyone else like Carl Sargent's Greyhawk stuff?
Post by: Joethelawyer on August 09, 2009, 01:38:22 AM
Iuz the Evil, the Marklands, all of it for After the Ashes.

I thought it was some of the best stuff TSR ever put out.  I still look to it for inspiration today.  And WTF ever happened to him anyhow?  I've heard rumors, but does anyone know for sure?

Its "From the Ashes"; and I think that period was the best for Greyhawk, anyways.

I'm a big fan of his GH stuff.  Seems like every paragraph is filled with adventure possibilities.  There's also the great unpublished Ivid the Undying.  I've used all his other GH stuff for years, but haven't gotten around to a grimdark Great Kingdom campaign yet.

Huh.  Didn't realize he wrote Monster Mythology also.  That's a handy book.

I'm a big fan of his stuff too.  The best D&D campaign I ever ran was with the From the Ashes stuff combined with his Night Below boxed set.  It's a shame he stopped writing.

From the Ashes is good, but it's not the Greyhawk I want to run. I want to run "my" Greyhawk, without heavy plot and backstory, without recent timelines of previously published works, and I find the 1983 boxed set is best for that.

Now again, taken on its own (I wish it had another name than Greyhawk), the setting you get "From the Ashes" is pretty good.

I really dig Iuz the Evil and The Marklands, but I've never been a big fan of From the Ashes. I think it would be fairly easy to slot ItE and TM into earlier Greyhawk, and ignore the more sweeping changes of FtA. From the Ashes seems more like it could be used as a possible end result if the PCs don't actively intervene in events, but wiping the slate clean and starting from there doesn't appeal to me.

Sargent is one of the more mysterious figures in RPG history. I've never read anything that makes it clear why he stopped doing RPG work, and his Wikipedia page indicates he was injured badly enough in a car accident not to be able to work (though who knows when that occurred). But then there are the reports that he was heading to a meeting (in Chicago, in the version I heard), and simply never showed up. He and Dave Trampier are the two biggest mysteries of RPGs, it seems to me.

According to a mutual friend, he was actually on his way to the airport to get to the meeting when he was run over by a car.

Did he die?  What happened after he got run over?

I am told he survived but essentially has no interest in returning to the industry. Beyond, that it would seem that essentially Carl's wishes are to remain private about the matter.

It's too bad; I'd like to see some new stuff by him.
