Assuming that one is not interested in using the Advanced Fighting Fantasy system for a campaign (I love the FF solo books, I just don't think that I'm interested in using that system for a long-term RPG), is Titan worth getting? If so, why?
Say I wanted to run a MRQII, S&W, Basic D&D, or Rolemaster 2e game. Would Titan work with that? If so why?
What about Port Blacksand? Is it easily detachable from Titan?
Thanks! :)
The original Titan if I remember correctly is all about its history and gods; the really big if you will. It was very well done, very colorful and legendary in tone. I remember the creation myth being particularly entertaining.
It should be easy enough to use with any other system, I'm not even sure it's even got any raw stats. Worth getting if you don't already have a high fantasy setting you like and you are looking for deep background rather than immediately game-able material.
The original book, at least, had almost no actual system material, it was all setting. And it was a great setting.
Also, yes, blacksand is very "portable": I ran a long Blacksand campaign that wasn't set in Allansia at all.

Titan is one of the best macro-level setting books ever devised. Keep in mind it is written as an introductory product for the 10-14 years old demographic, but otherwise, it gives you just enough information, and just the right kind of information to inspire, but not constrain. Add to that very good illustrations (the FF books had always shined there) and maps, plus a lot of little infoboxes with colourful bits about the world (like what kind of beer do orcs and goblins drink, what are the most popular games of change etc.). It is a setting book done right.
I've been perusing Titan for a few days now and LOVE it! Not one stat block or "rule" in the whole thing.
Lots of very cool illustrations and maps including Port Blacksand with floorplans for "The Black Lobster Tavern"!
Goes into the creation myth, heirarchy of the pit & map of Demonic plane and the animal court. Sections on Dwarves, Elves, Goblins, lizardmen etc. including culture, settlements/cities, armies, famous tribes, goals and lots more. Some info on the underwater folk.
Lots of everyday stuff as well including the cycle of Years, months/days, feast days , drinking and entertainments, travel, money etc.
Great maps including ancient lore regarding the one continent and Atlantis. A very nice overview of all the lands...not to much...just enough to get the creative juices flowing.
Seems you could use this setting with any system though brings to mind (A)D&D, T&T/Monsters Monsters, The Arcanum and Dragonquest.
I paid full price ($24.99) at LFGS for Titan as well as the core book ($29.99) and have not been dissapointed!
:)
Thanks for the feedback guys. At the very least, 'Titan' sounds like it would be a good read. I think I'll track down a copy. :)
The Port Blacksand book is still also one of the best "city sourcebooks" I've ever read.

Cool, I'm glad to hear this. I ordered a used copy of Port Blacksand based on the positive comments here on the rpgsite, combined with my old love for Fighting Fantasy, especially the Blacksand-book City of Thieves, that was my very first step into the world of roleplaying.
