Advanced Hero Quest--the board game I missed.

I owned HQ, back in the day, and it was very casual, very cool. But I did not know 'til yesterday there was an advanced version, with which you could actually run a pretty standard campaign. Don't know that I'll ever actually run the thing (which would require a LOT of printing cards and counters and stuff), but it looks like it might be sorta fun.

So, ye grand and knowledgeable gamers here...anybody with experience with it? Opinions? Bon mots?...Personal transgressions?...Pie?

If you are talking about the GW boardgame, it was OK. I got a lot of use out of it but it was eclipsed in most ways by Warhammer Quest, and more recently with the likes of FFG's Descent 2e.

AHQ was still just a board game. Not an RPG. But it was now opened up to more elabourate maps due to the tile system. WHQ took that a step further and removed the GM part and opened it up to the whole of the WHFB line.

Descent cleaves more to HeroQuest than AHQ. Good series though. But in some ways no longer the family game HQ was.

The rules and components/cards/tiles for AHQ are online with permission on a french site apparently.

Warhammer Quest definitely eclipsed HQ.

I got the new Conan boardgame as my new WHQ because I felt Descent had good ideas, but gameplay was too damn slow. My verdict is still out on Conan.

I am surprised HQ hasn't been revised and resurrected.

Loved Heroquest, hours of fun when I was a kid and I liked the implied if subtle setting.

I found a TON of HQ and AHQ stuff online, to include a couple of hacks. One of the hacks (Enhanced HQ) has skill cards you can acquire as you level up, that basically give you extra attacks, or do additional damage, and so on and so on.

I think, if I were to get back into this, on an occasional basis, I'd probably hew toward plain ol' Heroquest. I can print out most things. Don't really wanna plunk down for dice though,  so I thought:

Attack 4-6=hit (3 skulls)
Defend 5-6=block (simulates two shields)
Monster defend=6's only (the black shield)

I sorta liked the AHQ mechanics with the d12's, but would prefer a d6 model for them.

Heroquest was magnificent. Advanced Heroquest was good too, but struck me as super-basic Warhammer (with Warhammer Quest being 'basic warhammer', I guess).
