I have been picking up some of the old AD&D monster books for inspiration in DCC and BEC(MI). Recently got a pretty mint copy of Fiend Folio for less than $10.
There are some lame ones in there but some I really forgot were quite fun. I thought I would post a few to get some opinions or start some discussion as I re-read this tome.
I start with the Apparition, these guys are bad asses!
8 HD and averaging somewhere around 36 hp you better hope someone was willing to play the Cleric up to the level of turning Specters.
Your party probably got suprised anyhow and the cleric is sitting there slack jaw. (1-5) on d6.
Its undead and ugly. Once you regain your composure you start to consider all those life draining abilities, save vs. Death. Ok, but you're no chump. You've been leveling up and buying magic armor like a fiend. Your saves have improved!
How about those ability scores you rolled at lvl 1, 3d6 straight down the line? Not so much improving, huh?
The apparition takes on the fighter first and it hits. No immediate damage but 3d6 over the fighter's meager Int. score is a safe bet. The fighter is stricken with irrational fear but it's not over. Another 3d6 vs. CON. Ok, fighters have good Con. so worst case scenario the fighter runs away for 1-4 rounds leaving the other less melee based characters to fight fhis thing right? But no apparition rolls above the fighter's Con score and fighter drops dead of heart attack!
Ohh and attacking this thing? Well you have 1 rd after each attack where the Apparition is actually in the prime plane to attack. Otherwise it has an etheral immunity.
Crap! This is going to be a long fight. You can bet the plane travelling mage is next on the menu. Ohh and there might be up to 4 of them! Run away! But when you come back, your fighter friend has come back from the grave as the latest lap dog of evil, now there's five.
I like these guys they invite folks in!
