I can see the gm needing to be very happy with the system they use, but I don't really relate to demanding specific systems as a player. I'll play any system if I like the setting and most importantly, know the gm will run a fun game.

I actually liked 7th Sea. But Sickly enough I like fixing systems as well. I have used the Roll and Keep system several times for different genres. It has its flaws but I managed to make it something I am happy with.


I loved 7th sea's background and world as well. not much for the Metaplot but it could easily be ignored or used in the back ground as a world moves on / living world sort of thing.


Unfortunately it looked like a pirate game but was more a musketeers game in my mind. More swashbuckling than Pirate.


I love it but it does have its flaws.

Dude. Pirates is where you start in that setting.

Even if sometimes you end up battling a corrupt Cardinal or restless natives, you start with the damn pirates.

I actually wrote my homebrew rules and an alt-historical setting as a way of not having to buy 7th Sea when I wanted to run a swashbuckling game with a dash of fantasy.  It was recommended by a friend, but I looked it up and thought 'Well, if it's basically historical(ish) Europe with a bit of magic, I could just put together a simple system of my own, and use actual historical Europe, plus a bit of magic, and not have to buy and learn a whole new system and setting.'

Then as I refined the system, I made the rules setting generic so I can do anything with it.  I'm currently planning on using it to run the Ambassador's Tales campaign for Flashing Blades.

GEARS: Generic, Endlessly Applicable Roleplay System    My very simple, skill-based homebrew.
(Note: Turns out that there\'s already a system being developed called GEARS.  This isn\'t that one.)
