As I've noted elsewhere, I liked 5e way more than I expected.

I really like the idea of playing a [strike]ninja[/strike] Shadow Monk, far more than I could have possibly foreseen.

And in a flight of fancy that would shame me a week ago, I am perversely attracted to the idea of playing a gnome [strike]ninja[/strike] Shadow Monk.

:D

Thanks for the post. Will take it to the game table, if someone deigns to run it (my hands are full at the moment).

Yeah, the monk class is really cool in 5E. You can play a classic Ninja, a classic Kung Fu drifter, or a video game elemental blast guy.

.

You and me both brother.  My second fav PC of all time was a 1e ninja/bushi.  I think I can replicate him pretty well with the Way of the Shadow monk with a street urchin background.

Either way, I'm dying to play one.  Alas, Sept 13th can't get here quick enough (the next time I will be playing where I'm not the DM).

I always thought they were going after the "Ang" monk (Avatar Last Airbender)

Hmm, Noble Ninja Gnomes... along with the alliteration, there's a zany game in there.

That's what I meant. I should have written 'comic book/fantasy movie/video game/super-duper-magic monk'. Clearly, I have a loose grasp of what that's all about...

Sai should be bludgeoning, you know. They're blunt. Otherwise, neato.

Yeah, you're right.  And I knew that.  But I've always liked my sai stabby dammit! :)

I think its because one of my favorite comics was Ninja Elite back in the day, and they were all pointy.

Well they may be blunt but they will still punch a hole in you. I'd say thats piercing. Its still a slender taperd piece of metal used for thrusting (and catching) Hell, a sling bullet is blunt. But it will put a hole in you.

Function is the key.

it's one of the problems with assigning a damage type when a weapon could have multiple.  Halberd anyone?  Heck, if you've ever seen real 2-handed sword sparring, the pommels are used to strike often, and swords in general both slash and stab.  As you can guess, I'm not a fan ;-)
