the 1st. ed rules - It's like Battletech with boners, the 'ARMY OF LOVERS' mass combat rules are amazing, oily mess and little deaths everywhere

The newer lite-edition is a bit 'meh' but here it is:

You and your opponent are Rampant Robots - each roll 2d6 (a white die and a red die)

The white die is your FEAR, The red die your DESIRE

Every time your FEAR outweighs your DESIRE your robocock is downgraded

Every time your DESIRE outweighs your FEAR your robocock is upgraded

The 1st robot to reach 10 upgrades wins as they are FREED FROM DESIRE

BTW the only box sets I buy are GW, and most are priced around $75.

Don't forget the dark horse - the new Dr Who RPG is a) meant to be an introductory game for kids (but complete in itself, no "here's rules for level 1-3, now if you want to go beyond that buy these three expensive hardbacks" bullcrap), and b) if I recall correctly, will be a boxed set.

Really?  I thought that British retailers were responsible for the death of the boxed set.  Funny to see the new Doctor Who game coming out as such.

I think book shops and book distributors, in general, were responsible for the death of the boxed set, as well as the decision by game company executives (and especially by TSR) that they would rather have a presence in bookshops than in toy stores.

Now, I've seen the episode, "The Runaway Bride". She played it as an unholy amalgam of her two best comedy characters - 'Lauren' and 'Sweary Gran' - and yes, very annoying it was too BUT she can act in serious stuff - I'm expecting her to do better in the new series - whoo, the trailer's good.

Its no contest, D&D Basic will win the sales wars, hands down.

Which is better?  Have no idea.  C&C seems to be a good game, but I have no desire for it.  I'm not in the market for a Basic game at all, so I'm not a good judge.

Unless WoTC has finally smartened up about this, they will continue to make the same mistake they've been making with their "basic" sets throughout all of 3e: they'll be cripplewear; playable to something like "level 2", so you can only handle it for three sessions of gameplay, and after that you're expected to buy the main books. So people will be more likely to feel royally fucking ripped off than interested in the cool new game.

On the other hand, the Troll Lords' set will have no meaningful coverage on the market. A bunch of aging gaming geeks will buy it for its "collectible" value, and it will make no impact on the hobby as a whole.

No, the Box Set that stands a chance of changing the gaming world this year isn't either of these: its the Doctor Who RPG.
