This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hi all,

In my upcoming Victorian rpg, there is a small chance the PCs may go to Spain to follow up a lead.

Odds are they won't, but it is a possibility.

And I know nothing about 1890s Spain, so, can anyone here give me a brief couple of paragraphs to help me sketch it in broad terms should the need arise?

As I say, odds are it won't actually come up, so there's no need to go into exhaustive detail, but a brief feel for the period would be helpful should they go there.

Thanks all.

Basically, its a convulse period.
The First Republic has just ended, and we had a new Constitution. There are two main political parties which take turns in power, but the King is yet the Chief of State. The Socialist Party appears, and we have the first anarchist movements, with the first of the workers movements, that develop in strong social conflicts. In economy, we're way back from the rest of Europe, with an outdated agriculture and weak industry. First independentist movements in Catalonia and Basque Country.

We're losing our last colonies overseas (in 1898 we'll lose Cuba and the Philippines, and we'll give them to the US). There were also some conflicts in Morocco, but we still retained the control over there.

In few words: everything was quite basically screwed, and we were a second rate country back then, specially when compared to Britain, France, or any other great potency.

Glad to be of service. Arturo Pérez-Reverte has an impressive book (Trafalgar Cape) that paints a vivid picture of the previous period, who can help a lot to understand how deep in the shit we were back then.
