Title: WW2 Pacific Theater shoot-em-ups
Post by: Balbinus on January 14, 2009, 11:09:02 AM
Howcome there aren't any?

I've fought through Bastoigne more times than I can count.  I just finished CoD4 and fought through the former Soviet Union and the Middle East.

But the WW2 Pacific Theater?  I've not seen that, at least not anything good.

I note Cavscout's currently playing CoD World at War, but the reviews weren't so great.  Anyone got anything to say on that one (including Cavscout if he reads this forum)?

I’ve yet to play the single-player campaign as I bought it for the multiplayer aspects. It’s much like COD: Modern Warfare in that regard. You have to earn points to unlock the various weapons and accessories.

It does have some interesting multiplayer game types, but I like HQ and War the best.

In multiplayer, there are Japanese “based” missions and one side is US Marines and the other Imperial Japanese, but outside of the flavoring, you have access to the same weapons no matter what team you are on. So expect to see Japanese soldiers running around with German and Russian weapons.

If you liked previous version of COD you’ll probably like this one but lately I’ve played less and less COD and more and more Left 4 Dead.

There are two I know, Call of Duty: World at War and Medal of Honour: Pacific Assault. The MOH felt rather badly put together and seemed to consist of endless waves of enemies. The COD was so desaturated it was difficult to see anything and the near invincibility of your own character is even less realistic than usual and makes the whole thing a nice easy stroll.

Both concentrate entirely on US Marines vs. Japanese vanilla infantry (do they plot video games based on what Airfix makes?), depict the Japanese as unthinking devilish Fu Manchu mook types (COD fills it with torture porn but only by the Japanese) and feature square jawed moms apple pie Marines. Both also have awful music.

In terms of gameplay both are utterly average though COD has much better production values. Standard run and gun with the same old weapons, same old controls, same old missions. Both are 'cinematic' (i.e. spend there time ripping off war films). COD has the advantage with the flamethrower which is way cool.

Those are my impressions anyway.

World of War is OKish to run once through on the easiest difficulty with a friend in co-op, otherwise don't bother.  It's basically just a half-assed WWII mod for COD4 for the most part.

I've never played MOH:Pacific Assault or Rising Sun, though I think I saw the former in action once and it was pretty for it's time but beyond that nothing jumped out at me really.

Battlefield 1942 had a number of Pacific Front maps, and is quite fun to boot.

word of warning: do NOT play CoD:W@W on veteran if you value your sanity.
