Title: wow my trial sucks
Post by: Ghost Whistler on March 08, 2010, 10:26:24 AM
I don't think i'll be subscribing to LotrO long term. It's very good, dear reader, but my machine can't really do it justice. So i tried a WoW trial; haven't played for years and there's something about this unstoppable juggernaut plus my memories of it that make for a potent yearning.

Unfortunately while the game looks quite nice (much nicer than I remember) and I can run it (more importantly) the trial accounts are so neutered as to be functionally useless. Bit of a shit when i actually paid for the trial account - you can buy a dvd containing the game and a 14 day code for £1.50 in most game stores. :D

So many things are limited that you will really not get much use for 14 days. It really feels like Blizz regard anyone with a trial account as suspect. their reasons for doing so are because of abuse from the usual suspects (goldfamers/spammers/twats). But this strikes me as overkill - possibly bnecause i just don't get how these people are abusing anything other than the desperation of people who MUST HAS GOLD NOWS!!1!!111

Anyway i'm probably going to dive back into WoW, i just would have liked the opporunity to do so at my own pace (ie money) rather than be treated as the scum of the digitial universe. :D

No you probably don't care.

LoTR Online does look sexy, but I have a real life sadly meaning I wont be giving it a trial run.

It is in many ways very very good. It's very wow-like but a lot more classy. However you do need to have the specs to play it on top settings because of how good it can look. I have problems with missing textures and it's just not going to happen. Wow I can run. TBH they are both equally good games and if i had the cash i'd keep a subscription for both.

What I meant to ask was whether or not there's a way to upgrade from the trial account and buy the BC expansion without having to get the box from the shop.

You can buy it on the Blizzard website and download anything you need from there. You already have most of it on your system if you're playing the demo, it just needs the "key" code to unlock it for you and run any updates.

I loved LotRO, but you do need a horsepower system to get all the pretty out of it. That said, I really REALLY enjoyed the player community there - people are "serious" roleplayers as opposed to grind-monkeys like in WoW. :)

Wow certainly is the more populist game and, pleasantly, lotro doesn't seem to have attracted all the crap from that (such as goldfarming). But yes, you do need the computer cahjones to run it and for that reason i've happily decided to put my gaming time into wow for the first time in about 4 years (and for the first time with Burning Crusade).
