I saw this on /.
Apparently PnP RPG developers are not the only ones that hate their jobs :D

My response to him would be "Stop bitching and make good games."
My first thought regarding the article was: "You're playing the wrong damn games."
I mean seriously, Final Fantasy? Worse, a Final Fantasy whose design goal was "MMO offline"? Of course it's a goddamn grindfest.
.
Guy kinda comes off as pretty whiny, huh? If he wanted to play a fast RPG he could do Fable, more action and I finished the original game in 8 hours once.
Bah, just play some shooter like Kashell said. I haven't played a recent one that took more than 15 hours to finish.

This is all I wanted to say.
If he doesn't like the way the games play out then he, a game designer, should design them differently. He should come up with new and brilliant forms of computer roleplaying games - say, games which actually allow you to roleplay. Of course, that would involve actually making an effort with the computer's AI, instead of just boosting up the graphics. It'd be hard work, and might not succeed. So I guess he's not keen on that idea.

Of the things one can say about Spiderweb's games, a focus on graphics is not really one of them.
I don't enjoy sports management sims, my simple answer to this is to play other games and leave sports management sims to those who do enjoy them.
Works for me.
He should play Exalted.

This is why the RPGNow/OneBookShelf review department has the "Don't review stuff that you have no interest in" guideline. A lot of publishers bitch and moan endlessly that their stuff doesn't get reviewed because of this guideline, but I can pretty much guarantee that they'd
much less happy if this guideline was rescinded :D
I'll agree with him that the Final Fantasy games are no damn fun. I'll disagree with him that it's column-worthy to rant about that fact.
We live in a world with both DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden. Mastering both would be the work of a lifetime (or at least a month or two) and you'd never have to bitch about bad games again. :D
The point that I think is interesting is whether the mechanic of starting out weak and having to get strong is a problem or not.
Are there any CRPGs that are not like this? Is he painting CRPGs with a broad brush when there are actually good examples of games that do not force you to do repetitve menial tasks to level up and progress?
For me, I certainly have no problem with starting a character who isn't capable and following them on their journey to becoming more capable, but the more interesting thing to me is the decisions that are made on the way. Is the system itself compelling enough to make the journey fun?
