Title: The original Civilization for PC
Post by: cnath.rm on October 15, 2006, 02:36:57 PM
Recently found a copy of the old Civilization PC game, it loads up fine under XP (though I haven't had any luck getting any sound settings other then the PC Speaker to work) and is still just a great a game as ever. :D

Anyone else play it of late, or just have fond memories of the game from years ago?

Seeing as how it's just over 2mb unpacked, I can't help wondering if someone could recode it in order to have it run on a pda, :) I know I'd pay $10 for it no question. (maybe more depending on my mood if job/money status)

After I played Civ II, I could never go back.  IMO, there was a bigger jump between Civ and Civ II than between any other two sequels ever.

I never ended up trying Civ II, I used CivNet and rocked on Colonization, but haven't tried any of the others.  I remember reading a website awhile ago dealing with the history behind the different games creation, I can't remember where it is or I'd link to it, great reading.

Colonization is, IMO superior to either Civ or Civ II.  I fell in love with that game some years back.

I'm Indian myself and I would be just brutal against the tribes in teh game.  Fun stuff. :)

Snaging Cortez and wiping them out, after first getting that one guy who makes all of your missionaries function as experts, so you get a whole lot of extra converts. (if I'm remembering right)  I'm just glad it works under XP, I tried running it under Win98 and it would explode and restart the computer after you got your second founding father. (I still played from time to time, but it's better when you can play all the way through)

Do you prefer to start out in North or South America offhand?

you need to seel your soul and get a copy of CivNet (or one of the various internet remakes), because this is the king of strategy games, played over an LAN, internet or email.

Civ II: I skipped school for that one.

My highscore, without "We love ur president!" score-bumping:

244% on deity.

CIV one is too "broken", if you know the tricks. Civ II is the best of all of them. Still I played Civ I excessively and loved every minute of it.

CivII has a multiplayer option when you use one of the expansions. Anybody interested in a scheduled game?
Beats having a flamewar, doesn`t it?

I've got a copy kicking around, haven't tried it under XP, how does the e-mail gig work?  and how many players can it handle?

I think I can get a working copy of Civ II, and I'd be ok with trying multi-player in a few weeks, I'm on dial-up on someone elses computer r/now, but I'm hoping to be back on my own comp, and with cable access soon. (just moved today, need to get a job and such. :D)

BOO 3D-accellerated Civ!  HOORAY 1994!

I always, ALWAYS landed in North America.  If I time my settlers right, I can have colonies in Texas before I fill up the Congress.

Man, I'd LOVE an online game of Civ II.  Anyone know where I can snag a copy?

How much different is the gameplay of Civ II vs. the original or CivNet? (wondering how hard the learning curve will be seeing as how I've played the others)

Civ II's different enough that you'll want a playthrough under your belt before you try a competitive game.  The changes were pervasive and fundamental.
