This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I tried to read them, I really did.  They sounded cool.

But I got to the stupid pop etymology ramble at the beginning of the first one and closed the window in disgust.

Well, the most important thing to know about computer RPGs is that no matter how the graphics look by toiday's standards, the original Deus Ex is the best.

Now, now, Deus Ex is fine and dandy, but there are more worthy contenders - so it should go more like this:

1. Thief: The Dark Project (if considered and RPG, which it should be)
2. Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (the best of the traditional CRPGs)
and
3: Deus Ex (There was no Deus Ex II. Period.)

There are two games that contend for the title of "Greatest CRPG ever".

One is Fallout.

The other is Dragon Quest 5.

The great gulf of difference between the two games and their approaches to the genre mean that neither I am able to nominate over the other, so it is thusly a tie.

Baldur's Gate anyone?
Planescape torment?
That said, I agree Deus Ex is one of the best games ever made.

Id have to go with Fallout 2, DragonQuest VIII or Final Fantasy X.

Still, there's been a lot of good fantasy games on consoles of late.

deus ex was cool but I'd have been happier if it really did let you choose your own path.  I played through it 'properly' and then decided to play it again as a bad guy - however you have to do a mission for your brother, there's no getting round it.  I turned it off at that point because the sense of freedom went out of the window.

Actually you don't get to choose the path you'll follow untill the last mission, where depending on what you choose to do, you get to see 3 different endings.

I alsways picked the one where you merge with helios as it was the only way forward. The other two meant going back, which wasn't the right way to go. Only helios offered a way forward.

That, and I love Ghost in the shell. Yes, merge with the AI and become the next order of intelligent life!

I just finished it once, but got to see the 3 endings, as I save the game before making the choice, so I just loaded and played through the 3 endings.
After that I never touched Deus Ex again, it's been like 5 years since then.
