This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hi guys,

I recently got a copy of the old crpg Darklands, which supposedly runs on Windows (the version I have).

But it don't, I think it needs a dos emulator.  How do those work?  Can anyone walk me through how one uses a dos emulator?

It's on my G: drive if that matters, and needs to stay on that drive.

Thanks all.

Hmm. I do know from experience that it works with Win98.

Try double-clicking on the start file at first (usually an EXE or BAT). Sometimes they work normally (or with some glitches: Ascendancy on XP has no sound).

If the XP's DOS shell doesn't work for it (it doesn't for ROT3K III, for example), you'll need a DOS emulator.

You could try DosBox, which is apparently very good (although I havent used it much myself).

(NB, how do I get the code to appear so I can embed the URL in the Link word properly? Don't seem to have the right options on this forum)

DOSbox works fine by itself, but the best thing to do in my opinion is to get DOSbox and run it through DFend, which is a graphical menu addon for DOSBox, makes things so much easier.

Yep. DosBox rocks. You'll also probably want to check out the third-party DFend GUI for DosBox (it makes using DosBox much, much, more friendly). I've been running some old Sierra adventure games (the Laura Bow mysteries) and Bard's Tale trilogy using this set up and, aside from some choppy sound (my PC is a slightly antiquated P350), it works great.

IEdit: I see that somebody beat me to recommending DFend. They're right -- it's a great program.]

Ah!  Darklands!  I made up an all-girl party and sent 'em out to whack Germanic ass!  Good times, those.

I found dosbox to be a pain in the ass. It took forever to figure out what I was supposed to do with it (still not sure if I got it right), and it still wouldn't run Fantasy General.
