So, i've finally joined the console generation!

2 generations late! ;)

Anyway, i've got a PS 2 on the way. It's bundled with an old FIFA game, a 007 jobby and The Thing.

What old gems would you recommend i take a look at?

I'd prefer some games that provide longevity, but if you think something must be tried, give it a shot.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is fucking awesome
Buy Other Worlds, it\'s a multi-genre storygame excuse for an RPG designed to wreck the hobby from within

ICO is one of the most gorgeous and fun VG's I ever played. It's based on surrealist paintings and is more in the style of Myst than an action adventure game but does have action elements and can even be a bit scary. The plot is a young boy is born with horns and his family/clan leave him inside of a giant abandoned "castle" as a sacrifice. Exploring, he meets a girl dressed in white. Together they look for a way out, which mainly involves puzzle solving. Periodically however, the shadows in the castle come to life and try to grab the girl. It's beautiful, haunting and weird. Sort of Gormenghast meets David Lynch.

It's been a while but these stand out:

Disgaea 2 - turn-based fantasy rpg with infinite character levels, exploding penguins.

Resident Evil 2 - classic zombie/mutant mayhem, creepy.

Shadow of Colossus - kill giant monsters. By the same crew as Ico if I remember right.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for 80's Miami Vice/Scarface hijinks

If you like mascot-based platformers, the Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Dexter, and Sly Cooper series are all excellent.

Don't let Sly Cooper's cell-shaded rendering style fool you; that game is hard.

The Prince of Persia series is good, although it gets a little grimdark later on.

If you can find copies, the X-Men Legends series is some of the best four-player couch co-op out there.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

If you like giant robot games, try Armored Core 2. (AC 1 is a PS 1 game and its graphics are very dated and pixelly, but AC 2 was nice..)
High Valor REVISED: A fantasy Dark Age RPG. Available NOW!
Hearts & Souls 2E Coming in 2019

My brother recommends Summoner, Final Fantasy 10, and Kingdom Hearts.  Shin Megami Tensei Nocturn, if you don't mind mature titles.

If you like Zelda, Okami is similar in gameplay, but focuses on a world based on Japanese folklore, amd you play a wolf! Heck, a wolf with flames coming out of a manhole cover strapped to his back! The cell animation is gorgeous.

Indeed it was. I was thinking it was PS3 for some reason, but yeah, highly second that recommendation.

Okami looks interesting.

Anyone played the ultimate marvel game? Looks like it could have replay value.

13 also looks cool.

Second this. AC is really involving.

Ace Combat 4 is fun.

I enjoyed the Hyperdimension Fortress Macross game (note: the Japanese import, not the Robotech game which was kinda clunky) but you'll need to mod your console to play it.

Katamari Damacy is quirky and has excellent gameplay.

Omega

The two Hack/Sign games for the PS2.

Hack - Infection: Good story and interesting characters. Pretty straightforward.
and
Hack - GU: Convoluted story and some odd mini-games in it.

The great thing about these two is that each set comprises one big game. Same mechanics from one episode to the next and you carry forward all you did in one into the following. No having to relearn gameplay within a set. Though Infection and GU are different from eachother.

I loved the Tokyo Xtreme Racer series. Almost a car JRPG. You'd drive around the city challenging cars to races, then eventually a boss would come out and you'd have to defeat it.

And Gladius is one of the most underrated games. It was a tactical RPG from Lucasarts, set in a fantasy version of Rome.

Brilliant story, art design and voice acting, wrapped around a thoroughly unsatisfying combat system.  There's a couple of killer combos of equipment and fighters that are very easy to get that amount to the Double Dragon elbow smash.  Well worth playing through twice (once for each protagonist) just for the story though. Be warned that the ending is anticlimactic, since it sets up for a sequel that never got made.

TristramEvans: there's a PS3 HD remake of Ico and Colossus; that might be what you're thinking of.

If you like racing sims, the Gran Turiso series can keep you occupied for weeks.  If you want something more arcade-y, NFS: Underground is the ticket.

While Ico sounds interesting, i've read it only gives about 10 hours of gameplay.

How could i forget Deus Ex? In the shopping basket now.
