Just wanted to let everybody know that I suceeded in getting the game to run on WinXP. Not that I have the time to actually play it, but now I can sleep again, as I know I COULD play it.
The point is: If you need an instruction how to get it to run, ask away! I had SOME trouble, so nobody needs to experience that again.
How did you get it to run, then?
OK, here´s the idiots guide:
- Get yourself a copy of the Software. I´ll leave you to your own devices there. But who knows, it might be abandonware?
- Get yourself Dosbox
- Put the software in a folder like c:\oldgames\poolrad. It´ll work best if you use this exact path
- start Dosbox:
mount c c:\oldgames
c:
cd poolrad
start
Now the program starts. Get out your codewheel for the copy protection.
IF you have everything set up as I said, you DON´T need to change the paths in POOL.CFG. IF the paths are not matching up, you won´t be able to save or roll a character. The program will say "Insert Disk 3". So if you can roll stats, all is fine.
Important hint: use HOME & END to scroll up and down the menus!
That's very good news. I could make Curse of the Azure Bonds and the later games run on my PC, but not Pool of Radiance.
And yes, I do in fact own a code wheel, and the books, and the hint booklets. Got the collected version back in 1996, and held onto it. :D
Yeah, I think (God I hope its not part of the stuff I sold off before I moved) I still have my FR collection in storage at the parents' house, so this will be excellent. Thanks, Sett!
Fun-wise, how does PoR stand up to Baldur's Gate?
(For reference, I thought Icewind Dale was BG minus fun.)
