That's a very grim theme: like Arkham Horror except the question is *which* Great Old One is going to destroy everything.
So that's what FFG have been up to.
Yep looks cool, my only complaint 4 players only a 5th player controlling the empire would have made for an interesting addition. That though would in no way sway me from picking this up if everything else continues to seem as good as the initial presentation makes it sound.

That's the first expansion. Its called the Empire Strikes Back!
It looks like the world can win, and the players lose.
Yeah, as I understand it resistance to the Chaos Gods is in the form of the peoples of the Old World desperately trying to get their act together, so it's possible for everyone to lose if people infight so much they forget to slap the humans down. Having a player play "the Empire" under such circumstances would be like having someone play the Mythos in Arkham Horror; it would change too much of the game.
That said, there's plenty of room for expansion; I can see room for a Skaven-themed expansion to allow a 5th player to be the Horned Rat, and an Empire-themed expansion which swaps out the Chaos Gods entirely for the various deities of the Old World, allowing for a wider range of players to be involved.
Definitely getting this one when it comes out!

FFG pulled this off with the Sauron expansion for LotR. It added a competitive aspect to the formerly cooperative gameplay. Suddenly the Fire Vagina was an actual player at the table.
Having a player play the empire would certainly change the game.... soooooo? You have a 2-4 player game where everyone plays chaos vs each other and the random effects of the game. You have a 5 player game where 1 person plays the empire. I don't see a problem. It's no different then playing other co-op games where they have an optional rule where one player is a secret saboteur.
But yes, it could definitely come in the form of a 5th player expansion.
Or a 6th. Those pesky Slann are rather ardent foes of Chaos.
Make for an interesting concept. The gods all want to win but have to face each other. The Empire clearly wants to stop them at all costs, as does the Slann, except the Lizzies and Humies aren't gonna work together either.

+Elves
+Norsemen
+Undead
+Dwarves
+Skaven
Did i forget some factions, still?
p.s.: Lizards are booooooring. They didn't even exist when Blood Bowl came out!

Those are all factions. But in this game they all wouldn't necessarily be in opposition. The 4 chaos faction certainly are at war with each other to see who gets the lions share of a shattered empire. Undead, Dark elves and Norse are all pawns of the ruinous powers. Elves, Dwarves, some Norsemen and humanity in general would all be aligned together against chaos and the rest. Skaven are partially in line with the ruinous powers but also have their own destroy the world agenda. Slaan are even more alien in nature.
So you could have 4 chaos powers, The empire (the good guys), Skaven and Slaan all competing for control of the empire.
It's on my list of games to buy at GenCon. My son and his friends are really into Warhammer and are constantly trying to convert me...
Coooooool.
