Title: New painting thread.
Post by: thedungeondelver on July 14, 2015, 05:05:25 PM
I'm working on the Otherworld Miniatures Demon Idol among many other projects; you can read the diary here:

http://thedelversdungeon.blogspot.com/2015/06/demon-idol-blog.html

Also on the workbench is a Reaper "Monique DeNoir" I'm dressing up as Drelzna for the ultimate fight in S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth which I am running for my Friday night group, and a Reaper "Cavern Crawler" which is a pitch-perfect Behir to play the role of Lludd (my group already squared off against him so they saw a highly incomplete model :( ).  By the way, if you want to buy and paint a Cavern Crawler (Reaper stock number #2730) to match the one on the cover of S4, the (Reaper) colors you want for the blues are:

9076 Deep Ocean
9077 Marine Teal
9078 Ocean Surf

I hate to sound like a Reaper fanboy but those are absolutely the exact colors to get the Behir blue.

Also, I assembled my "Celestine the Living Saint", a 40k model for eventual priming and painting.  I don't "do" 40k (yet I have a distressingly large amount of 40k minis :( ) but the mini was gorgeous and when I saw the chance to get a new-in-blister example of the patron saint of the Sisters of Battle, in metal I had to snap it up.  It's huge; clocks in at almost 3" table to top of model, but it's narrow and top-heavy.  Likely she'll only be a showpiece.

I put my Reaper Titanic Skeleton back together; it lay in pieces for the longest time due to mishandling, it's about half-painted right now.  It was supposed to be the center piece for a game I was running at a convention but it got left at home :(  it's been lingering in between completion and not  for the longest time.  Reaper stock number is 2911 (altho there's a Bones version that is cheaper and has a different stock #).

Oh!  I "disassembled" my entire horde of Genestealers that came with my 2nd edition of Space Hulk: that is, I removed them from their slotta bases (which will now go to lesser miniatures).  The genestealers (and Terminator  Marines from the same set) will go on these bases:

http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_30_77&products_id=354&zenid=64d64f47568ce3494cfa340860035f7b

...as I'm making it a "deluxe set".  Additionally I have a set of Citadel paints from the early 90s (yes!) that are still wet and highly viable (yes yes!) that just happen to be the right colors for painting old-school genestealers!  So once they're on their new bases, they'll get painted up too.

Phew.

EDIT: Also picked up the Survivors from Left4Dead from Studio Miniatures (they were a gift, actually), and got those based, too...

Who else has mini projects going on?

Genestealers are going to look great on those Secret Weapon bases!

I have the Bones version of the titanic skeleton - such a relief not to have to worry about chipping the paintjob.  I did it as a quick and dirty paint-up (drybrushing was involved); I may go back and smooth over some of the bone work.

A very impressive model though!

Most recent project has been some buildings and scatter scenery for Frostgrave.  I used the Pegasus Hobbies Gothic Building sets and "ruined" them with a hacksaw.  Scenic pieces (tables, chairs, altars, statues) were a mixture of Ral Partha, Fenris Games and Reaper Bones dungeon furniture.  Also done some more monsters and wild animals - a Wendigo from Fenris Games and some Foundry bears.

With the painting last night of the Frostgrave treasure markers and an adventurers' campsite from Renedra, that project is more or less done, although I may put together some balsa-wood bookshelves and other bits and pieces.

Pics if you want 'em?

Some character models for the next month or two, then on to a small GW Skitarii army - I don't play 40k but the models are lovely and like you I seem to have far too much 40k stuff...  Lots of spares, which I've used with some ultra-cheap mechs from eM-4 and my bits box to provide heavy backup.  I may do some more figures from the spares, using cheap torsos and legs from other sources (possibly eM-4 again).

Quite!  So will the two squads of Terminators.  I really can't wait to dig in to that set.

It is; and I had thought to use it for a run-through of S1 Tomb of Horrors eventually, I didn't for a couple of reasons.  One, Reaper makes a more appropriate two-sword-wielding skeleton of a more reasonable size, here:

(Reaper stock # 2742)

...that's about twice man-height.

The other was I didn't really get into running S1 far enough for that to come up!

Those "early 90s" Citadel paints are still made by Coat d'Arms.  I believe they also make the paints for Privateer and ??Foundry.

And pics please when you have them!

How do you find the Reaper paints?  I've not much experience with them.

Yeah!  I think that's awesome.  Plus I believe they have a paint equivalency chart but if they don't, the dakkadakka forum does.

Yeah, when I can get something painted and photographed that doesn't look like complete ass :P

They're generally pretty good although I'm a little disappointed in their various reds.  They're either too dark or too pink.  Now...as I said in the original post the blues triad are absolutely some of the most beautiful blue-greens I have ever, ever seen.  Hands down.  Also they make a set of drow colors that look really good.

Excellent - I'll give the blue-greens a go!  I tend to use a mix of brands anyway.

I don't think you'll be disappointed; the blue-green triad is gorgeous.

Also I agree about using several brands.  Only reaper seems to have that blue-green but conversely, the colors I'm going to use for my genestealers seem to be strictly Citadel in origin :)

Sweet Christ, the old Citadel Paints are still available - Hallelujah!  I have the complete Reaper line, but the whole professional, eye-dropper bottles with flow-enhancer, palette, triad blending etc. method is overkill when you just wanna bust out some orcs and gobbos for this weekend.  I loved those old Citadel Paints, the old Ral Partha ones too.

I still want to try the whole "get close enough, then dip the orc in Army Painter wash and flip off the extra" method.

I would highly recommend brushing it on instead.  That way you can pull off any extra and any areas where it pools too much.

If you want to keep a brush after you use it you'll need some sort of solvent like mineral spirits or whatever.

After it dries, the matte coat makes a huge difference.  Krylon matte is fine, as is Army Painter's anti-shine, but Testor's Dullcote is my favorite spray.  For brush on, I really like Vallejo's polyurethane matte varnish (it's water based but still strong).

I can't speak for Ral Partha but the old Citadel paints?  Yup!  Here's a couple of color equivalency charts:
