Title: Mordheim Early Access on Steam
Post by: crkrueger on January 06, 2015, 02:25:35 PM
Mordheim on computer...everyone must buy this, because then...we might get Necromunda.

Tristam, one of the three bands you can use now is Clan Eshin Skaven, so you have no excuse. :D

Been watching it as well, but after the four or five editions of Blood Bowl and two of Space Hulk now I'm a tad gunshy on buying anything GW on PC for at least six months of it's release.

I'll probably cave, but damnit this time I'm not buying the later versions until they move on to a different game entirely so I know it's finally done. I would buy all the versions of Necromunda though.

I've been watching the dev videos and I'm more worried than hopeful, but it does look pretty and faithful to the game.

I have zero experience with GW videogames besides seeinga  friend of mine play a recent Space MArines game that seemed pretty cool, so I'm very hopeful. The videos of gameplay Ive seen on Youtube all seem pretty nice. I'm not a videogame player by nature, but every few years I find one that tickles my fancy (the last was Ico for the PS2, before that American MCGee's Alice, before that Ocarina of Time) and this looks to be that one.

I also in my research stumbled across a very old GW game by the title "Shadow of the Horned Rat". Obviously very primitive graphics wise in comparison to more modern games, but was it any good?

It was awesome, even if I never got past 3rd mission as a kid (it's hard as balls).

The quality is all over the place, because there are so many developers on them; GW have been giving out licences like candy recently.

For the recentish games, the highlights are probably Dawn of War 2 (Base game outstays it's welcome, but the expansions are amazing), Space Marine (Which I think might be the one you saw - 3rd-person character action game?), Space Hulk (Either version, depending on whether you want a board game or a computer strategy game; they're fine, absolutely fine) or Warhammer Quest (Really good tactics game based on the board game).

I couldn't get into Blood Bowl. Not sure why. It just didn't feel right, playing it without my regular opponent.

There's a lane-pushy strategy game that is apparently wank, and Space Wolf is a pretty skin on a microtransaction store. Carnage is a nice 2d scrolling shooter featuring Space Marines.

There was a sequel to Shadow of the Horned Rat (Dark Omen) which was about fighting undead. Horned Rat was hard; I had it on the PlayStation, and that shitty controller didn't help. But if we're going to discuss old GW video games, Space Hulk on the Amiga was where it was at. Real-time with pausable tactical view, and you got a first-person viewscreen for each member of your unit. The campaign mode required managing limited amounts of Terminators and ammo. It was a masterpiece of both tech and gameplay; the new ones are pretty, but they don't match up.

Aside from some repetitive stadium backgrounds they're reasonably solid in the turn based modes. Never got the hang of the real time. Some of the other Blitz mode options were interesting though. Largely true to the tabletop with a few minor alterations. That said, Dungeon Bowl has not impressed me at all.

Space Marine is a pretty impressive game too, probably my favorite from their major licenses.

Holy Crap I loved the old Space Hulk, it was full of Alien moments.  I played Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen to death.  GW also had a licensed game that was XCom with Space Marines (I want to say Chaos Gate?) It was buggy and never got fixed but let me say it again...XCom with Space Marines!

The new stuff, I vastly prefer DoW with the various incredible Mods to DoW2 (but I haven't checked out the expansions).  Space Marine was a ton of fun, Death From Above with jet pack and Thunder Hammer.  The WFRP games have been ok, Mark of Chaos had one of the best trailers ever.  The MMO was entertaining, but too weird where it differed in presenting the world.  Blood Bowl is a pretty good conversion I think.  The new Space Hulk is fun, but doesn't have the pucker-inducing moments of the earlier one, it's a pretty boardgame.  The IOS WarhammerQuest is sheer distilled awesomesauce.

Yeah, it was Chaos Gate.

Chaos Rising is more DoW2, but without the filler missions and with a lightweight alignment system. It also added Chaos to multiplayer.

Retribution adds the Guard, campaigns for all six races (Well, one campaign, but with different voiceovers and storylines for each race), along with some light base building and more RTS-y elements (You can build more squads, heroes can either go on missions themselves or send in a squad of upgraded minions to replace them). There's also a wave-based multiplayer co-op mode called The Last Stand.

I paid full price for all of 'em and I'm quite happy, but it goes on sale in a bundle pretty often.
