Title: Metaplace: Massive Multiplayer DIY WTF!
Post by: Abyssal Maw on September 19, 2007, 12:16:59 PM
I am really impressed by this:

http://metaplace.com/

No, seriously: this could be a great place for creating an online roleplaying community.

QuoteEvery world is a web server, and every object has a URL. You can script an object so that it feeds RSS, XML, or HTML to a browser. This lets you do things like high score tables, objects that email you, player profile pages right on the player -- whatever you want. Every object can also browse the Web: a chat bot can chatter headlines from an RSS feed, a newspaper with real headlines can sit on your virtual desk, game data could come from real world data...

Just thought  that was neat. I'm signed up for the Alpha.

Well, I was initially intrigues by their spiel, and we could certainly use a replacement virtual world for the piece of shit that is SL.

Then I navved over to the developer's website and discovered it's being headed up by Raph Koster.  I experienced a sensation best described as instant disappointment.

I agree that he kinda sucks. Well.. more than kinda.

This guy lists his main contributions as Ultima Online and SW Galaxies. So we know they have not only "lame" covered by an expert, but also "broken and infuriating". Let's see, he also wrote the completely false "theory of fun", so we can add "intellectually bankrupt theory jackass" to the list as well.

But the potential of this kind of web-app is very cool.

Hah, I remember having mixed feelings about Theory of Fun--meaning I liked at least half of it. Haven't played any of Koster's games, though.

No no no - Koster is a GOOD thing. When you see him list "SWG" as an accomplishment, don't think the way it is NOW - it IS a broken piece of crap. Think about what it was BEFORE, when it had hundreds of thousands of players, working and INTERESTING crafting, useful professions, and people who actually played for hours and hours and never once drew a weapon.

Remember those ads for the Star Wars RPG "What's THIS guy's story?" pointing to the fifth stormtrooper from the back? THAT is what SWG USED to be - you were the folks who's day-to-day existence made the Empire (or the Rebellion) run. I played a CHEF for god's sake, and I LONG for the days when I was one of the best on the server. I'd still be playing now if sony (spit) hadn't decided to "fix" the game.

Not everyone was Luke Skywalker - but not everyone WANTED to be. Now its a requirement that you be a l33tboy Iconic Figuahr!!!1!!! Yay, I'm a level 1 Jedi (wtf?!!?!).

In MY mind, Koster is a GOOD thing.

Yes, I'm a bitter ex-SWGer - you'll find us everywhere, trying to recapture the glory days. The FIRST person I teamed up with on my recent return to WoW - FIRST ONE, completely random and out of the blue - bitter ex-SWGer. We're bitter, and ex-, for a reason.

:barf:

And here I was thinking about taking a look at it again, 'cause I was messing around with a burgeoning Bothan arms merchant way back when it was new. Good to know before laying out dollars that it turned into fucking garbage. Thanks!
