Title: Mage Knight: Destiny's Soldier (Nintendo DS)
Post by: Gabriel on September 29, 2006, 03:01:43 PM
Anyone pick this up?  I was considering it since it's a turn based tactical RPG and because I used to really like Mage Knight.

Can't really find much information about it online tho.

The few reviews I've read said it's pretty good.  I was hoping to rent it first to give it a try.  Apparently though it's a fraction of the game Mage Knight Appocalypse is going to be - but that's for PC.

I went ahead and got it.

For the most part, the tabletop game has been ported to the DS.  There's no multiplayer, just solo CPU bashing.  The storyline bits are long winded for my tastes.  As I understand it my dude is prophecised or chosen or something to save something or other, so I have to walk along and kick everything's ass in my way.  That's all I need to know.  There are multiple characters you can select for your leader.  I don't know if they have an effect on the storyline.  As you can already guess, I never play these games for the storyline, so I couldn't care less.

The main change made to the game is the freeform movement of the tabletop has been replaced by a hexgrid.  Why they chose to do this, I don't know.  Luckily, it doesn't really alter the basics of the game all that much.

The main problem with the game is the interface.  The DS touchscreen is a half assed thing even in the best of circumstances, and this game is far from that lofty height.  The controls are inaccurate enough that you'll be watching your units land in the wrong hex and/or face the wrong way and you'll be wishing for normal cursor and button controls that just aren't there.  Like Advance Wars DS, a touchscreen is one of those good ideas that in practice is just slower and more awkward than good old conventional means.

While I didn't pick up the DS one I do have Mage Knight Appocalypse for PC.

So far my impressions are that it's like Diablo only the controls are kinda wonky.
