I'm just curious. I just bought a cheap glass chess set at dollar general after seeing it as I thought a gamer might s well have a chess set.
I have in the past but strangely not at this time...hmm...
I DO have a copy of SJG's "Proteus" which is much funner than chess IMHO...:D
I do . I've not played in many years though. It's just too hard a game for me now and to be honest I was never that good. I've a got a job that makes me think hard all day, I need fluffier pastime now, something that helps me switch off.
Yup, a search of the shelves with boardgames uncovered a really old set with wooden pieces, but I can't remember when it was last in use. I was never a big chess talent and for classic games I prefer backgammon.
I have a couple. I was in chess club in high school...
Nope. I haven't ever gotten into the game. My wife has a Smess game though. It's sort of a derivative.
Yep, two wooden sets we bought in Hungary. One is a regular set and the other is a three-player variant on a hexagonal base.
Yep...mine's glass, too.
Marble set here.

I have a chess set or two, but I think I have more Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) and Shogi (Japanese Chess) sets, a few of each in different styles, than I have Western Chess sets. (And, yes, I've played both Xiangqi and Shogi, though probably not better than a good amateur.)
Yup. Classic set here. One of my favorite games.
I own a dragon themed chess set. No one ever wants to play, though.
A magnetic wooden set and tiny pocket magnetic set. But when I used to play it was mostly on the computer or against online opponents.
Also have a plastic magnetic Chinese chess set but I'm completely hopeless with strategy on that one.
I've an old wooden set in the basement, but I want to find a more compact set -- the board is huge, and I really like the nicer marble/glass ones that'll fit on a small coffee table.
Haven't played in years, though. Not because I don't want to, but because most people I know don't feel like it most of the time, and when I'm online I'm either doing work or playing other games. I should probably start asking my friends for some games, though.
The shop near me also has a glass Star Trek set of some weird 3d chess variant, but it's a signed/numbered collector's item and they want $200 for it.
I have a massive metal dragon chess set (some sort of collectors item) and yet I never play it that much. I love the dragons too much to part with them though.
We have a classic, wooden set somewhere in the house. Also, a Go set with a plastic foldable 'board' but genuine stones.
4 sets, 1 is glass.

Well la dee dah! Aint' you all fancy? ;)
I no longer have playing pieces (they were stolen.)
I do have my board, which I made by hand, of wood. (I took a shop class and while everyone was making "Crossbows" that were terrible ones at best, I made a chessboard.)
I've got several of them around but I haven't played in years. My favorite is a Roman chess set with little centurions for pawns, etc. I used it in an rpg game once actually, Hall of Risk from Chaosium for Stormbringer. Excellent game and one of my players all time favorites scenarios (do they still call them scenarios?).

Stealing chess pieces? That's a new low...
Hmm, BTW was there ever an official D&D chess set? That could be interesting, especially if the two sides used different pieces in white and black.
White pawns could be human fighters/soldiers in medival theme. Black pawns could be orcs. The blak queen would just have to be Lolth and maybe the black kind could be von straad.

Not as far as I know. But the Dragon Magazine forums/lettercols used to have fairly frequent listings of miniatures needed for a Dragonlance chess set.
I had a lovely polished marble chess set. One of the rooks got lost, I still don't know how. It's a decade later and I'm still heartbroken over that.
I also have a clear glass chess set as seen in the first X-Men movie. Been far too long since I've played, though.
I moved into an old house a few years back and found a fun fur chess board with giant 8 inch plastic pieces. It's been really hard to find reason to get another board, but I think I'd like to try making a 3D chess set from star trek.

If you have a giant fuzzy board, why not just go the extra mile? Action-figure chess set?
I think I'd start with Ninja Turtles vs. the Foot Clan myself. Or possibly plastic dinosaurs vs. toy cars and jets.
Just saying.

.
Yeah. It sucks. I taught my now 22 year old nephew to play on that board. I haven't taught my younger nephew but he has parents into games though I thought they'd teach him, but maybe not.
I've got a couple of old chess sets... but it's been a while since I've played.
I tried to teach my ex-girlfriend but it doesn't move fast enough for her and she prefers games with more players.
I own a couple cheap plastic ones and a little magnetic travel chess. The game is fun, but I'm just not very good - not many people seem to play casually and people who are big into the game blow me out of the water.
i recently started up some chess and either im really rusty and am taking ages to get better again or the windows computer was a lot easier then the engines i am using now
on the other hand i just managed to force a draw
Definitely. Have my own Chess set I designed and carved with my grandfather over one summer when I was a kid.
Honestly prefer Stratego though
I have a cheap one at work. My colleagues and I used to play for bragging rights. Sometimes I used it to study stuff when I was more serious about getting better.
I own several chess sets. The imagery and symbolism of the game fascinate me, but I'm a pretty terrible player.
At the moment, no. The one set I had I gave away to a niece.
I played in high school. My team won the Boston area championship one year. I was also my college's champion one year. Just too busy to keep up with it and was never good at memorizing all the different openings and plays. Gave it up and rarely played since.
Quote from: Doughdee222;819177never good at memorizing all the different openings and plays.
Pretty much why I gave up on chess. Once you get beyond "demolishing the family on holidays" level, chess seems to become all about memorizing openings and so on rather than about analyzing the board as it stands. (I'm not saying that analysis disappears from the game, of course, just that it appears to be deemphasized.) So I abandoned chess in favor of Avalon Hill and the like, where there are enough variables (and the randomness of dice!) that memorization isn't an option, even before getting into setting up custom/random scenarios, which is what I've always really loved the most.
