Title: [FPS] Bioshock

Holy cow.

Also, an art book:

That looks like the first FPS I'd want to buy in years. Alas, I can't see it run on my 2004 Dell.

Me, too. And I'm not even good at first person shooters. But I enjoyed some of the behind the scenes stuff I found on XBox 360 Marketplace and liked the demo, so I'll get it. Not tomorrow, but soonish.

Bioshock is the only pro PC game I am looking forward to (the other one, The Dark Mod, is expected to be free). Alas, it looks like some hardware upgrades will be in order to properly enjoy it, but still...

I will be picking up my Special Edition copy this afternoon when I get off work. Report to follow.

Based on the demo movie I watched, it'll be a system HOG. Hope I've got the horses to pull it.

First impressions:

:what: :eyepop: :jaw-dropping: :wtfsign: :guns: :shovel: :kickback: :skull: :eyecrazy: :banghead: :sweatdrop: :highfive: :woop:

Pretty much in that order.

Played for 2.5 hours before I realised I needed a break, and I imagine I'll have sore shoulders tomorrow from being tensed up.

And a bit of advice - do NOT play in the dark. Tried that. For about 5 minutes.

Oh, and the 6" tall Big Daddy statue I got with my special edition is metal, not plastic. Of course, it was made in China, so knowing my luck its made from depleted uranium or something, the way they're making things these days.

It's official: I'm a ho.

I was at the Wal-Mart, shopping the new releases on the movie aisle. I wandered by the video game section - and there was Bioshock, flaunting it's Big Daddy cover. It said, "John, you know you want to do me. You know you want it, you dirty, dirty ho."

And I did. I was a dirty, dirty ho and I did want it.

So I bought it. Wasn't planning on it, but...

Now I'm just going back over the demo ground.

So, is there a PC demo? And if yes, where?

Yes - check bioshock.com

Or just save a step and get the game. Woot!

A little heads up for those planning on buying this game on PC:  http://www.gametab.com/news/1012397/

The game uses a remote activated copy protection scheme that only allows you to install the game up to two times, and then it stops working.

So if you're gonna get it, I'd recommend either getting the Steam version instead of the regular CD version.

Or a decent no-CD crack. ;)

I'll try the demo first - first, I don't have enough time to devote to it just right now, and second, I want to see how it plays on my machine. I'm sure I need more RAM, but there may be much more.

I've read the Steam version also does the remote activation thing, so people might want to check up on that as well.

Is there no love for consoles?

I'm too old and uncoordinated to try to move with one stick and aim with the other. Resident Evil 4 was a total joke. My FPS love is strictly PC-based, but consoles are great for other things like Madden and Gran Turismo and such. Fighting games as well.

All Steam games are activated, and downloaded, remotely.  But in the specific case of Bioshock, the only limitation on the Steam version besides the usual requirement of a good Internet connection, is that you can only have it installed on two seperate computers at any given time.

2K/TakeTwo finally responded to the outrage over the DVD version's limit by upping the limit to 5.  Way to miss the fucking point there guys.  There shouldn't be a goddamn limit to how many times you can use something you've already fucking paid for.

I also learned that they apparently snuck some of this DRM crap in the demo even, in the form of some registry code that it sticks in your system and can't be removed even by the administrator account.

Looks like I was wrong.  And not in a good way:

Long story short, every version of Bioshock, including the demo, and the Steam version, contain the SecuROM rootkit.

For those of you who bothered to get a 360, I'm gonna recommend you get it on that.

Isn't this the same bullshit that Sony was just class-actioned over?

Actually I guess Sony didn't use securerom root kit but some other vendor rootkit?

Sony actually owns SecuROM . . .

Punishing the people who actually buy games instead of pirating them. Classy.

Right. On the other hand, the slimy ideas of the distributor notwithstanding, I played the demo yesterday. Three observations.
1) It runs very well at the default settings with a computer that is actually below the minimal system requirements. I got some chop at one point with massive water effects, but otherwise, no problems at all. The programming must be rock solid.
2) I don't think I have ever seen a more bautiful game. The feeling of running around in a fallen utopia is incredible... all the small details are in place, and while I used to think the elements may not work together (earlier screenshots had a bit of a circusy ambience), they do. It is creepy, unsettling, and fortunately unsanitised.
3) So far, gameplay makes it look like a more complex shooter with audio logs (which are done with a pretty clever idea). It doesn't have the RPG aspects of System Shock II and Deus Ex. Still, it is just damn good for a lot of other reasons. The level design of the demo was linear, but I've heard it is on purpose - later on, you can roam more freely.

Definitely interested in the full game... and I don't think I will let an ass-backwards copy protection scheme ruin it.

I finished it. The ending I got - I rescued - was very nice.

My great irritation with these kind of security systems is that they actively reward piracy while punishing legal behaviour.

Like my fucking Stargate Atlantis DVDs where I'm forced to sit through copyright warnings and ads for other series before I can watch the show?  I'm seriously considering just downloading the next series to avoid all that shit.

Shame with Bioshock, that does sound fucked up, how does this thing work on the demo?  What happens if I uninstall the demo, I still can't lose the DRM software so some piece of practically malware then sits on my PC for the rest of time?

Well, I finished it again. Wanted to get every achievement, so I had to play on hard. And it was hard. Definitely liked the rescuing Little Sisters ending better...
