Title: FF XII

So apparently it's out in Japan, and there are translations out of menus for the real hardcore fans, but I still feel I'm completely out of the loop: What platform(s) is it going to be available for, and when do we get a US/Europe release?

Anyone know if it's going to be a MMORPG or a real game?

Goody.  I just finally got myself a PS2 and FFX.  Nice game.  Too bad I'll never be playing FFXI.

I played a bit, but I never really got into it.

I also have this lovely little thing called a "message board" where I ask questions and other people do my work for me.  :p

I played the demo (included with Dragon Quest 8) the other day.  As you'd expect, the game looks beautiful.

Combat was realtime, and felt very much like a MMORPG.  The thing was, in the demo you had to control 3 characters, and the action didn't stop while giving commands.  From the demo, I'd say it's going to feel nothing at all like any other previous Final Fantasy game.  If anything, it will probably feel more like Secret of Mana (if you remember that old SNES title).

That's unfortunate.  That was one of the things I liked about the FF series.

According to the latest issue of Official Playstation Magazine, the game will have the option of either realtime or turn based, among other things.

I played the demo and hated, hated, hated the real time mode; it was all the irritating parts of Kingdom Hearts rolled into one.  The more turn-based mode was better, but I'm not sure I like the summons.   I'm cautiously optimistic about the game.

What's odd about the summons?

How can you put the demo into a turn based mode?

My memories of it are awfully vague at this point, but I remember really liking Secret of Mana.  It was a darn fun game.  FF constantly reinvents itself, so changing the rules again wouldn't be out of character, really.  :)

I'm just glad turn-based will be available.  It's not FF if you don't have combat turns.  Plus realtime SUCKS ASS when you have little kids running around and getting in front of the TV all the time.

There were two sample demos, one was turn based the other real time.  Different levels too.

As a further note, according to some of the news circulating, random battles have been dropped from teh game.

You mean just walking along and wham fight?  Yeah, the new style doesn't seem very conducive to that, it's more like Xenosaga where you see the enemies and can avoid them if you wish.  Unless you mean they took out all the non-story encounters, in which case that's just doofy.

No, like Xenosaga, or FFXI...the enemies are visable, and you can avoid them if you wish.

In the version of the demo I played, combat encounters were very much like they would be in a MMORPG.  There are monsters out in the field, and you can approach them.  If you get too close to a hostile monster, they aggro on you.  The scene doesn't change to a combat scene/scale.

There are ties to another game set in Ivalice, too - Vagrant Story.

Quote from: SobekWhat's odd about the summons?

You summon your monster and it stays out, following you and attacking your enemies.  Having it out slowly drains away your character's power, however.

The real-time battle system and summons system are heavily influenced by FFXI.
