Title: Favorite tactical combat games
Post by: Varaj on March 16, 2006, 09:44:27 AM
I love Battletech.  Hmmm crunch goodness.
I also like Renegade, Leviatian and Legions.
I will throw some special love for Warhammer 40k but too many people are like, "If your mini is painted and exact you can't use that."  Screw that noise I'm more than happy to use a paint bottle if that is what it takes.

My first tactical love was Panzer Blitz/Leader, but Squad Leader was able to do so much more.  I would love to have a squad leader equivalent for modern stuff but none of them have really fit the fill.

Ogre is cool for it's simplicity and neat concept/setting.

I've played with several historical medieval minis games but can't remember any of their names.

D&D and Star Wars minis are decent simple games - I wish had the time and money to play them.

Probably Warhammer Fantasy Battle and 40k are my favorites.  Not so much because of the rules, but just because of the setting/source material I love the world.  After that Battletech has a special home.  Though my all time favorite and though it's a bit of a stretch to place under 'tactical combat' is Blood Ball I love that mini based game like no others.  I'd play it every day if I could.

Saddly I haven't really played any tactical games for a few years now, my money is going to other places and the number of people that I'd actually like to play them with have moved away or ran out of time to do so.

Oh and one other I thought I'd mention the Clix version of Crimson Skies is so much better then the original.

In before D&D 3.5 :p

I've played the D&D minis game.  Play a simplified version with my daughter from time to time.  And we used to have some epic Battletech action going on.

Battletech, Battletech, Battletech.
Full Thrust.
Starfleet Battles.

But I don't think I've really played any of them since high school.

Hrm...  I wonder if anyone would be interested in a Full Thrust PbP...  I've still got the rules on PDF.

Haven't played but I have the rules.  Would it be significantly faster that Star Fleet Battles pbp.  SFB really loses it's tactical feel when a duel takes months.

yeah this a cool game. Have you played Wreckage! from FFG. It's kind of a simplified  version of Car Wars.

Battletech was always my favorite.  Many a night has been spent moving giant metal minis around a battlefield, trying to gain an edge over that jerk in the mech with clan technology in it.

Warhammer and 40K
Battletech
SFB
Car Wars

...not necessarily in that order

I used to play Star Fleet Battles and Starfire a lot. I played an early version of Battletech as well (got schooled by my brother), and played Blood Bowl a few times. But I haven't played much since high school, either.

Star Fleet Battles
Adv. Squad Leader

I always had a softspot for Car Wars, never much of a Battletech fan (although my brother LOVED it).

Car Wars!  YES!
Also - although probably lesser known - the tactical space combat rules from the Star Frontiers supplement Knight Hawks!

I really enjoy Warhammer 40K.  BUt then we make sure we do not play with any asshats that insist on exact detail on the figures.  Hell most of our minatures aren't even fully painted.

Lessee...

Car Wars
Battletech (the group I played with used 3025-era rules only)
Star Trek Tactical (not SFB, but the very similar FASA game)
The Traveller: TNE space tactical combat system (IIRC it was called Brilliant Lances or something like that - been too long)
And, though I've only got to play it at cons, Ogre/GEV

Yea, Brilliant Lances.  It was the detailed system for small ship combat.  There was also Battle Rider for larger ship combat.  Both were good but I found them a bit slow.  I did like have sensor lock being a big part of the game - or was that more in the space combat game for T2300?.

Brilliant Lances was fun but if you have more than 2-3 ships... *zzzzz*

Another for Car Wars :)

Looks like I'll be getting onto 40K, as my little cousin has just got the bug... any advice so I don't have to buy him everything

Ignore the rules on painting and miniature must have item.  Just use what ever you want for markers and use the 40k rules.
Oh yeah a $10 laser pointer will be the best accessory you will every buy for figuring line of sight.

Game Workshop (in that order)
Necromunda
Space Hulk
Dark Future (Car Wars type game, but less complex, and you could use matchbox/hotwheels scale cars)
Blood Bowl
W40K

Others (no particular order)
Star Crusier (2300AD Space Navy battle game, "X-ray missiles away!")
Battletech
D&D 3.5

I liked Striker (GDW), but it was difficult at the time to get great 15mm figs, so we mostly used it to make cool guns, vehicles, etc for Traveller

It was good but the construction rules were a tad too nitty gritty.  Fire, Fusion, and Steel even more so.

I haven't played Shogun or Diplomacy (though I've read the rules to the latter), but I wouldn't call any of the other ones you mentioned a "tactical combat" game. IMO, tactical combat means that the units you control either represent a single individual or a small unit, and the focus of the game is on a single fight. Axis, Diplomacy, and Civ are more strategic in nature.

I picked up and printed out the rules off their website.  However, I'm lacking starship models and a hex mat.

I'm thinking about using some ships from RocketMen (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/rocketmen/, if I can someone to play.

Go to Starship Combat News (http://www.star-ranger.com/Home.htm)

It is the main community for Scifi gamers. There are a number of companies that produce some great minis.

I was a long time 40K junkie, but my brother and I just liquidated all our stuff. We hardly ever played, the game store that we played at went out of business, and the prices just keep going up, up, up. I've switched my miniature longings over to painting fantasy figs for D&D games.

I've found that the Dawn of War computer game has been sufficient to scratch my 40K itch. I still loves me some Space Marines.

Lot of love for games workshop games, but hate the prices...

Warzone was good too

For me it was Ogre first, then Melee, then Wizard, then a long hiatus from tactical games, then the biggy Battletech and it's various add-ons. I'd say Battletech is probably my fav.

The biggest complaint I hear about GW is the price, I know a loy of people who no longer play because it was too expensive, a lot of the LGS have stopped carrying it because it is too expensive. Curently GA is losing a number of LGS and the number is shrinking. The Sword of the Phoniex is now gone and Titan is down to two stores.

My favorite games...hmmm.  Of all time I'd have to say:

1.  Vor: The Maelstrom
2.  Starship Troopers
3.  GorkaMorka
4.  Battlefleet Gothic
5.  Battlegorund WW2

I've played both Warhammer Fantasy Battles and Warhammer 40k, but those games sucked!  At least in my opinion.  I thought the rules were kludgy and goofy, and made much more sense in a kludgy and goofy game like GorkaMorka, or an abstract game like Battlefleet Gothic.

Agreed. Shogun (aka Samurai Swords) is a strategic game. I love it, though.

My favorites for tacticals would be either "Johny Reb" or a Napoleonic system that escapes me. Chainmail is okay, but really shows its age. (When I wargame, I really want to wargame.)

Battletech is a blast, too. As is Car Wars.  And Star Fleet Battles is a great way to kill 14 hours. DDM is a fun diversion, but wouldn't really hold my interest the way the others can.

Well I believe you're thinking of Star Cruiser for 2300 AD.  The system self describes its space combat as 'hide and go seek with bazookas'.  With the higher end technology found in the GDWs core Traveller universe, Battle Rider ships were quite a bit hardier I think.

Car Wars was awesome at the beginning, but got so involved in accurately modelling Automobiles, that what they really wound up doing was accuratly modelling why people don't arm the family car if they intend to fight (the worst example was the "trailer full of guided mIssiles"...the guy never had to move his car).

I loved Renegade Legion Interceptor a lot. Plenty of tactics in it.
