Interplay planning Fallout MMO game
Long-dormant publisher files "confidential" information about proposed $75 million project with Securities and Exchange Commission.

While Fallout fans are looking toward Bethesda Softworks' upcoming Fallout 3 as the future of the franchise, original publisher Interplay has resurfaced from a lengthy hibernation with plans for a massively multiplayer online game based on the property.

Late last month, Interplay made a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission and noted that it would be spending the first half of December meeting with European investors and giving them a slide-show presentation of its current activities. In the slide show, which Interplay labeled "confidential," is a plan for a Fallout MMO game to start production as early as next month.

To get the game through its proposed July 2010 launch, Interplay is projecting that it will need a total of $75 million. Few details were given, but the publisher did note that it would be a subscription-based game and that it was expected to provide a return on investment within three years. Interplay projects that the game would be profitable in its second year with revenues of $160 million, assuming it could garner 1 million subscribers in its first year.

You know what happens when you assume...you make an ass out of you and your lenders...

Given that only 2 (World of Warcraft, Lineage II) MMORPGs out of 12+ games made it over the 1mil mark in 1 year, why would I believe you'd be able to do it also?

Yeah, but how much will the online version resemble the Fallout you know and love?

I'm suspecting the MMO will be something on the order of:

"Hello, stranger.  I would appreciate it if you would go and kill 25 ."  (200xp).

I'm just sort of down on MMO's in general.  It's mostly "Push button, receive biscuit."  Very few MMOs based on licensed properties end up feeling like said property when all is said and done.

While part of me clings to the name RCSample has my feelings down on the subject.  Fallout 2 was the last good game in the series.  Since then we've had Fallout Brotherhood of steel which took the setting and completely missed the point of the game.  While I would love to see a post apocalyptic MMO game, be it Fallout or another franchise I think we have a few problems.

1st a post apocalyptic game means that humanity is on the fringes and grouped together in small populaces often journeying into the unknown would mean never seeing another soul, potentially ever.  An MMO on the other hand usually resides on minimal servers and have huge populaces often to the numbers where you are never actually alone somewhere - specially once they find the spawn point.

2nd a post apocalyptic game means you and your team (again limited members) must rely on each other to flourish and survive in this barren wasteland.  An MMO again usually has vast teams with nearly infinite wealth and their only threat of survival is fighting another similarly leveled team

3rd Fallout worked because it was a good story.  The mechanics to be honest were nothing fancy.  While an MMO can certainly do the mechanics usually the story is non-existent.

Now the exception.  I think they could do Fallout as an MMO style game if they followed the Guild Wars model.  Guild Wars actually has some good story driven action, the wilderness is for you (and your minimal group) to explore and only the cities are packed.  Also they have many servers so the population is relatively spread out.  However I doubt they will do Fallout like Guild Wars because there isn't as much money in it for them.

One idea would be something like the CoX supergroup bases with chunks of Eve.  Groups of characters collecting resources and using them to improve their settlement.  Now I've never played Fallout, but would this sort of thing fit?

Not a big MMO fan, however Im a HUGE fallout fan so this might tempt me in the same way the Conan MMO is tempting me.

That said, I hope this doesn't delay the single player Fallout 3 single player RPG Bethesda is supposedly working on, cause those guys make really good RPGs.

Don't give it the time of day.  I wouldn't even expect it to actually come to fruition.

This is just a desperate man phishing for venture capital.

Even if the game did actually go into dev, the head of Interplay, who's also the only person left, proved with Brotherhood of Steel that he doesn't give a fuck about the games, it's just a franchise to milk.

I have more hope for Bethesda's FO3 than this, and I basically hate Bethsoft's RPGs.

Eh... Brotherhood of Steel for the PS2 was an ok game.

Basically, I really liked the game, thought it was a good use of the infinity engine... it was just too short, which makes it about like Balder's Gate: Dark Alliance in my book (a good game I wish I'd rented rather than bought).

Are you saying you didn't enjoy The Elders Scrolls saga, not even Oblivion??

Not answering for him.  But personally while Oblivion did make some fantastic strides forward, Morrowind was still the truer RPG.  The made Oblivion to accessible and took the challenge out of it - dumbed it down in other words.  It really doesn't get good until you tack on a bunch of player mods.  Morrowind on the other hand is a classic RPG and really separates the wheat from the shaft.

So, you don't like the open-ended MMO type RPG (I place Morrowind in this group despite being a single player game, it just FELT like an MMO to me) and you don't like the action-oriented button mashing RPG (like Fallout BOS)... there ARE RPGs that you like yes?

Cause honestly, you've eliminated two pretty big swaths of the current RPG market on console and puter.
