Hey -

We're going live in the coming week with a new, highly refined d6 based RPG Framework for table top role playing, designed to be open source and royalty free from the ground up.  We've named it c6, or the Cinema6 RPG Framework.

The Character sheets are up online for all to download and view in PDF format, the layout is close wrapping and it should be up in the next 3-4 days.  Check the site for more updates...
Take a look at our site: //www.cinema6games.com

Thanks,
Wicked

What do you mean by "Framework"? I know what I mean by it, but it seems like a contradiction in terms the way you are using it. Do you instead mean task/conflict resolution sub-system? or do you mean what most would call "System"? Or do you mean something ele.?

Added: Where are you in New England? I'm in Burlington, MA, and Bedrock games isn't too far from me. If you are really Wicked North, you must be in The County... :D

It looks like another version of WEG's D6 system.  So far it's just character sheets and vehicle sheets, but at least they have gone a step in the right direction and have the same attributes across all genres.

I'm a fan of D6, I'll give it a look.

So?  You could make a similar complaint about any new game.  There's only so many different dice mechanics, and most have already been done numerous times.

"Another roll under system?"

"Another Dx + attribute + skill vs Target Number system?"

"Another percentile system?"

"Another step-die system?"

That was judging by looking at the character sheets in the OP's link.  It didn't say at first whether it was directly based or influenced by West End Games' original d6 system.  "d6 based system" can mean anything without context.

Yep - JAGS is a D6 based system, as is FtA!, Traveller, and GURPS. None are based on the WEG D6 system. That's really open there. I still want to know why this is a Framework instead of a System, though. There's nothing particularly Framework-y about WEG D6.

To answer some of your initial comments and questions:

Framework, we use this term for a few reasons.  The first being that a Framework is designed from the ground up to be used to build better, newer things, and two, because our intent is to have it as open ended as possible and extensible as possible.  We have applied Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) principals in the basic development and approach to the core behind the Framework's game mechanics and systemic design.

Is it based on WEG's d6?

Yes and no.  There are a lot of similarities with WEG's d6, however we have vastly moved from the way they do things, including mapping skills across genres so cross genre game play is simplified (to name one).

We have a large number other refinements that heavily borrow from several RPG table top systems in the upcoming Alpha release of our core documentation, and are already working towards acquiring an IP (Intellectual Product) license from a major player in entertainment.  As well, we are already working on "expansions", mainly to demonstrate the versatility of the game system and to provide some insight into how to leverage it within other genres.

Why make it Open Source and Royalty Free?

A major factor for our business decisions in making it open source and royalty free is that we intend on making our money from published IP versions of the product, so the core framework should be free.  WEG's d6 is and was a great system, but what really made it great and particularly popular was the Star Wars IP, not the game itself.  The license and all the great things players could imagine from that license is what pulled them in to buy the products.  We plan on getting some great IPs as well, and hope our decisions to release it to the public will garner some support in the gaming community.

I've skimmed it. I'll mention this one bit, although it may be simple taste difference. I'll start a new thread so as not to interfere with this one:

Lack of a D6 STL (or whatever the logo / IP licensed thing's called) and WEG on burnout mode make it hard if not impossible to make a D6 game. So there's a bit of stumbling about currently to come up with a replacement.

Though in this game's case it may just be a "we liek D6 but-" thing. Skimming the doc it does seem to hew fairly close to D6, just no able to use the name D6. >_<

Still, the idea of a compact, generic D6 type game is very useable, so I downloaded this. Since this is meant to be a framework, perhaps more options / rules toggles?

WickedNorthGames

We're actually working on several iterations using the current Framework to demonstrate the versatility and extensability of leveraging the mechanics in place.

Addressing the fact that a d6 logo and STL don't exist: Essentially, we got fed up with trying to wait for attaching to another license of any kind.  As well, we provide a great enough variance and are actively working on acquiring un-named IPs which will bolster things when appropriately applied to c6.  We intend on distancing ourselves from WEG d6 and their licensing schema and offering ours in all iterations as license and royalty free, making it a more centralized and core mechanical source.

Wicked

Order of priorities for our current major projects at Wicked North Games:
1. Special IP-License Acquisition Project
2. Star Wars d6 Conversion to Cinema6 RPG Framework. We are also preparing a Star Wars specific Character Sheet to catalyze this process. We welcome comments and thoughts on the Cinema6 Forums for the conversion process (Force Points, Dark Side Points, Force Powers, Force Skills, etc). A major point in the process: We want people to have the rules foundation for playing "dark side" characters, to help tell the stories of those that struggle and eventually overcome their dark side, etc. So dark side characters will be a playable concept in the conversion. As well, Force Points should get addressed through Special Abilities at this point, forming something of a temporary augmentation.
3. Core Doc RC
4. Azamar
5. Descension
