Title: [KS] Alpha Blue - a space brothel
Post by: VengerSatanis on September 22, 2015, 04:41:24 PM
[O5R] Announcing my latest NSFW gonzo, science-fantasy, sleazy "adventure and campaign toolkit" kickstarter, Alpha Blue:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1575519826/alpha-blue

QuoteAlpha Blue was a Federation space station for the study of sexual addiction and rehabilitation of its clientele.  That was back in the good old days when enjoying sex was for deviants.  Behavioral psychologists believed that stimulus overload would cure addictive personality disorder.  Simply, give those hopeless degenerates what they crave... seven-fold!  And pretty soon, their obsession will burn itself out.

It was years before those kinds of theories were debunked and said behavioral psychologists were rounded up with the rest of humanity's failures and blasted into the nearest star.

Now decommissioned, Alpha Blue is something akin to an interstellar whore house or "love boat", drifting from planet to planet, acquiring new talent, clients, and security.  It's as big as a city, so there's no shortage of wild escapades, interesting characters, lucrative opportunities, and naked throbbing pleasure.  Plus, there will be plenty of scenario seeds fleshed out for planet-side shenanigans.

That's one of the weirdest ideas I've seen in a while.

And yet incredibly vague at the same time. What kind for adventures are intended to be played here? What are the central conflicts that a group of players can explore? A brothel in space is in itself not something that would really make me interested. I would need to know a little more about what this setting is supposed to be used for, how it is made interesting for the players and GM to flesh it out.

Fall From Grace's brothel in 'Planescape Torment' was interesting because it was very intricately tied to the setting material and the characters that worked there. The whole location was brimming full of potential adventure in how each of the prostitutes had something valuable to share with the players, something that tied player and setting fiction together.

From what I read here, the sole selling point is 'brothel in space'. It does not scream of excitement to me.

Does this support 5e?

Do you have a product that includes sci-fi or modern classes?

Look up "Hotel Andromeda" by Jack Chalker. Its an anthology of short stories taking place in a SF setting.

What you get from such a locale, like a hotel or convention are tons of social interactions, or worse. Plots, rumours,  political intrigue, crime, murder mysteries, partying, barroom brawls, and so on.

Would probably fit well in Ashen Stars.

The blurb on KS refers to it as an "O5R" product, which I presume to mean "hybrid of OSR and D&D5e".  So you should probably be able to go either way with it.

I purposely left it a bit vague because the book isn't written yet.  Hopefully, that doesn't scare you away - all my KS books (with the exception of The Outer Presence) were all or mostly written as the KS campaign began.

It's definitely going to be more than just saying here's a space brothel, go have fun.  There will be hooks, seeds, inspiration, and usable gaming content throughout.

It'll have HD, HP, AC, Attack Bonuses, Damage, mention of saving throws, etc.  So, yeah, basic D&D, OSR, and 5th edition compatible.

Alpha Blue is my first sci-fi heavy book.  Everything else is fantasy or science-fantasy - except, again, for The Outer Presence, which is modern (specifically, the 1970's).

I'm sure there will be various house-rules, classes, and races at the front of the book.
