Quote from: walkerpYou are in a mall when zombies attack. You have:

1. One weapon
2. One song blasting on the speakers
3. One famous person to fight along side you.

What / who are they?

1. A katana.
2. Something pounding and loud, to get my blood pumping for battle!
3. Bruce Lee.

Oh, i missed this one!

1. I'll go with the aforementioned flamethrower - see below.
2. Zombie Eaters or Surprise! You're Dead! - Faith No More
3. Oliver Reed - when he was alive obviously. Mean fighter, noted drunk. So, in the eventuality that he goes down, my flamethrower suddenly has an alcohol soaked body to make go 'kaboom!'.

if it's only living folk, then i'll go with Brain Blessed - just 'cos.

Before battle begins Brian booms "BUT ONE HORSE TOWN YOU'LL BE DESTROYED!" so loudly that the zombies are stunned for 2d6+2 combat rounds. Brian then mulls over the question of combat with the dead and then shouts "WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER?" before he swipes at an oncoming zombie. :hehe:

Weapon: My specially consecrated and blessed Cricket Bat, which is already in my Zombie Survival Kit.  Bonus Backup: A pair of extra large pewter beer steins, one for each hand.

Music: Battery, Metallica

Famous Ally: I AM my own famous ally. But I'll take Milla Jovovich anyway. Hey, she already has plenty of expirience AND if worst comes to worst, you always need a potential 'damsel in distress' to give you the karmic edge to truly overcome.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.

You know, it's interesting...

Piston options for the M16 series have been around for a quite a while, and there's been at least three programs to find an replacement and/or upgrade. Yet they've never gone with a piston model. Why is it that no one asks why?

From my own experience with a light weight .223 rifle with piston (mini-14), I think it's a trade off. I could feel the weapon... rattle with each shot. Something I didn't experience with the full size/full weight M1A1 rifle. It significantly threw off my aim on quick following shots.

One example... may have been a less than perfect weapon...

Still, it's an additional moving part. Makes me wonder if there's a accuracy/reliablity trade-off...

Quote from: John MorrowWell, I said it depends on the ammo.  A gun without ammo is pretty useless.

Certainly was an issue in our Zombie campaign, I wouldn't trade the Fireaxe for gold there.

My SKS has a piston, and I don't think it has a deliterious effect on accuracy.  Then again, the SKS is not the most accurate weapon in the world...but it's pretty good out to 200 yards.  I can maintain a 2 inch group at 100 yards with my SKS over open sights with Wolf ammo, but at 200 yards the group opens up to about 8 inches, which bothers me...

I've never experienced problems with my SKS, although some crappy Russian ammo (the Bear and Tiger types) tend to not eject properly about once every hundred shots or so.

Sound about right. In contrast the M16A1 was solid out to 300 yards, and the A2+ series out to 400 yards.

There was a wonderful History Channel (I think) special comparing the AK47 and the M16, and the difference in accuracy was immense. As in solid nice groups with the M16 while the AK was unable to even hit the target.

But I don't think the piston has that much of an effect. That's due to other things. And there are fine piston using rifles that hit wonderfully (the full size M1A1, M21 and so on).

Time for me to do some research, it's something I haven't explored in depth before...

Edit:

Found it. Bolding mine.

QuoteUnlike all the other gas operated modern assault rifles, the M16 does not have a separate piston. Rather, it deflects the gases into a small chamber inside the bolt assembly where the rotating bolt acts similar to a piston. This system works well provided clean burning powders are used in the ammunition. The primary advantage of this system is enhanced accuracy when firing full automatic. It also reduces felt recoil to a very low level. The main disadvantage is it allows carbon to accumulate inside the receiver, which mandates cleaning after each use

Nice, I was basically right in my thoughts...

There may be, but if I'm fighting zombies, I think I'd be wiling to sacrifice a little accuracy for reliability.

Quote from: gleichman ;216386Certainly was an issue in our Zombie campaign, I wouldn't trade the Fireaxe for gold there.

The short pick on that axe is ideal because it's pointy enough to punch holes in things but not so long that it will get deeply impailed in the target.

Your choice.

But I'm of a mixed mind on it. Rapid follow up shots many well be needed if there's a hoard at close range, and I have to (for the traditional zombie) put it into the brain or it's wasted and may as well not even be fired.

Lots of factors apply. But in the end the most important one is to use a weapon you're familar with, and confident in- as always.
