So, is there a reason why you picked the avatar you did? I know we all bask in the sexiness of Rotwang's narrow pink tie, but where there ever a moment when he considered another color? Is JimBob really black, wear an afro, and appear in increasingly poor Hollywood decisions?
As for me, I recently switched to this one because it's my family's traditional coat of arms, and I liked the way it looked. Simple as that.
I chose not to have one because I'm too lazy to poke around and find a good one. :)
A robot in a wizard hat pretty much sums up how seriously I take my hobby.
Kain Blueriver just seemed appropriate.
Although, I've been thinking of changing it to Charles Bronson.
I think my choice is quite easy to explain.
My current avatar is just something I picked up over at the ICE forums and decided that I rather liked.
What's more strange is my 'Willow' avatar over at RPGnet. I had it for a few weeks a couple of years ago (I was watching a lot of BtVS at the time, and was in the mood for a change). When I switched it all kinds of people there (i.e. four) complained, so I went back to 'Willow'. Then, after a few more months, I tried changing it again. And again there was a public outcry. So back it went, and it's stayed the same ever since.
It's an in-joke.
Cleto is both cute and functional; being the anthropomorphic representation of los guantes de campeones, Cleto Reyes. The only pity is that I can't snag the animated gif of him hopping around and shadowboxing.
Historical Note: Cleto Reyes is the traditional choice of hard-punching fighters with tough fists. The padding Reyes gloves is thin and malleable, allowing for -in theory- more force to pass from fist to opponent. The physics of the matter just ain't there but generations of fighters have put their trust in the brand all the same.
My own fists are fairly small so I stick to stuff with heftier padding, such as Winning and Shevlin.
To shill my latest game, of course. Pretty soon you'll be seeing a Sopwith Tripe or something.

I used to post as an unregistered user on RPG.net back when it was allowed. For my "name" I used to just type a couple of characters quickly and randomly on my keyboard. Like that
fjhfkfkjf
or
fhjfkjglg
or
fjkgjkjkgkg
Eventually, I figured out that outside of a few people like Balbinus, I was stigmatized due to being anonymous. A few people had been referring to me (in good fun) as "the random consonant guy" or things like that. So I decided to register as such and to have my random assortment of letters as an avatar.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say that people who look down on posters that have low post counts or because they don't register regardless of actual posting content deserve to be sodomized with a warhammer. Repeatedly.
OK, that inspired me! Except it's a Fokker Tripe rather than a Sopwith. :D

Y'know, I don't have a damn clue. I used to have some crazy, hypnotic, dancing carrot on tBP but got bored of its cutsie gyrations so went avatar hunting in the wilds of the interweb. If found this alien one which I liked, changed my title to 'alien intelligence' and have stuck with it ever since. I've migrated the avatar to my LJ and, now, to here. I've never been able to pin down why I like it or feel it appropriate (I've never really tried to be honest), I just do.
My buddy, my heartie, my pal Anjiko-Z (not her real name) drew the illo; I colored it with Photoshop and stuck it up here.
Why pink? Because I actually own that tie;I got it at Aardvark's Odd Ark in Pasadena, CA in 1998 for a buck. It sums me up very well I think.

I can attest to this. I have seen it and was nearly blinded. ;)
My avatar is a crop of Jesus and Javier Carmona Esteban art that they did for Roma Imperious. It is the Manes Atrox.

Actually, dude, that day I was wearing my OTHER pink tie.
I own two. The Pasadena one is skinny, vintage 1980s.
I like foxes. I go by "RedFox" online.
I found this adorable fox pic that says "I'm a fox!" at the bottom somewhere out in the wilds of the Wired and decided to use it as an avatar.
Before I settled on this one (before I came here), I'd switch it up every few days to every other week. This one kinda stuck though.
It's just sooooo cute!
Mine is Harry Kipling (Deceased) a comic book character and the last remaining vestige of the Neo-Brittania Empire. He kills gods.
Being British, an atheist and a lifelong fan of 2000AD he's a good choice.
Pip pip.
Mines easy, it's apicture of me, taken on my laptops built in camera. My last one was a picture of me in skull like face-paint. I use pics of myself because I think I'm crazy/sexy/cool enough to pull it off.

Originally I had,
(http://www.gamecircle.org/uploads/cavt444eb71f535b7.gif)
to promote GameCircle.org (http://www.gamecircle.org/), the forum, contact and campaign wiki service for Aussie gamers.
Then David R kept commenting on, "your Jules-style
English, motherfucker, do you speak it? demeanour", and I thought that seemed right for this forum, so I changed to that. Just so that people would have fair warning.
Also, Jules is like "Jim Bob" - it's a reminder not to take myself too seriously. That's needed when discussing such profound and serious issues as rpgs.
Mine is one of the plethora of Fujiwara mon, basically a Japanese Coat of Arms. I'm descended from the Fujiwara and Sekiguchi clans and the Fujiwara Wisteria just looks cooler to me I guess.
This is my second Avatar. Normally on message boards I don't use 'em. Seeing JimBob's and the Pundit's avatars inspired me, to have one over here. (Thanks Uma Sama for your help...and off course, the big Pipe Smoker in Uruguay who keeps us on the straight and narrow - gaming -wise :D )
Why this particular image? Well there was/is a war going on. Elias is one of my all time favourite characters and I think he is the epitome of my "plays well with others" philosophy.
Off course I forsee that I will be shot by my ideological opposite and have a Christ-like death scene on these very boards :brood:

I made mine at an online Flash-based avatar site.
It looks surprisingly similar to me.
EDIT: Huh, and I just realized that I never uploaded it here.
EDIT2: Ok, now it's there.

My avatar is a little drawring of me that I did about 2 years ago. I thought it went well with my username. :)
Quote from: Zachary The FirstSo, is there a reason why you picked the avatar you did?
I picked my avatar because I'm not a big fan of avatars.
I loves me the turtle.
I did a google search for "nWoD" and this is what it gave me.
It's sort of a theme thing. It's intended to match my title, "Fullmetal Necromancer". The icon comes from Warcraft III, and is for one of the undead ability upgrades, and the look of it looks like some kind of armored yet deceased hand. It fit.
"Fullmetal Necromancer" is an idea I've been kicking around for an homage to Fullmetal Alchemist.
Because I killed the last honourable man.
Because I can go down fighting.
Because its not our future.
Because I hold in my heart the memories of my fallen brothers.
Because I accept the challenge.
Because they vote how their archbishop tells them, and who tells the archbishop? Their king with his pointy hat what sits on his throne in the Forge.
Because they've done nothing, contributed nothing.
Because you must look to me, and see who is under my knife.
Because I'm gonna teach you to speak English with this fucking knife!
Because civilization is crumbling.
Because a real native is someone who is willing to die fighting for his country; there's nothing more to it.
Because I don't give a twopenny fuck about your moral conundrum, you meat-headed shitsack.
Because at my challenge; by the ancient laws of combat, we are met at this chosen ground, to settle for good and all who holds sway over the five points: us natives, born rightwise to this fine land, or the foreign hordes defiling it.
Because that, my friends, is the minority vote.
Because that's what maintains the order of things.
Because I know your works. You are neither cold nor hot. So because you are lukewarm, I will spew you out of my mouth. You can build your filthy world without me.
Because that's how you stand up to the rising of the tide.

Because I'm twisted and evil. More machine than man..;)
I like Monty Python.
I might change the avatar one of these days, though.
Jeff Cooper is about the closest thing I've ever had to a real-life hero. I've enjoyed reading his commentaries since I was a kid. He died last year. I kind of like the picture (he really looks like the old curmudgeon and surly cuss that he was) so I think I'll stick with it for a while.
I thought it was Martin Sheen. :deflated:
My avatar is from the 3d avatar making site Meez. It was a fun little time killer and it produced a pretty rendition of me so I thought "why not"?
Here's a full pic:

The sword is a small homage to my handle, Zweihander.
Edit: Ooops. Makes sense that if I use a link to post it and fiddle with the pic later it would change
I'm still waiting for people to pick and agree on an avatar for me.
Bloody democracy...I might have to give up on all of you'se and embrace dictatorship (ie, pick my own).
Bump the thread and I'll vote. :)
This thread has got me thinking about starting a "pick me an avatar" thread myself.
I'm so used to seeing this stare i figured it's be a fun avatar.
I wanted to be sure that you had all seen the Yellow Sign.
Who's Jeff Cooper?
And yes, the fox picture is cute.
What is that Balbinus? It looks like a one-legged question mark with a scorpion tail. I suppose it could be symbolic of some of the trips I went on back in the day.

It's the Yellow Sign, it gets used in CoC a lot, though originally it goes back to a writer named Chambers. It is a sign of madness and entropy, viewing it according to the source stories allows certain forces to enter your life usually to cause destruction and madness.
So then it is a symbol of those trips. :)
My login name is a reference to my favorite Angel episode, and the avatar is, of course, the Devil Robot from Futurama, except done up all green cuz of that "Go Play!" dealie over on RPGnet that I thought was a cool concept.

Well, see it's an ape. A gorilla, in fact. The only albino gorilla, whose name was Snowball. And you see there, with Photoshop, where I gave him a little Santa hat, and stuck a gaming book under his arm? Yeah. He's festive, and simian, and he likes roleplaying games. It seemed to suit.

I'm always asking my buddy Nate Piekos (http://www.realmofatland.com/) for tips. I think folk here will dig his stuff -- it's D&D inspired Fantasy.

Sweeet!
At first I didn't care for the Go Play movement that started at RPG.net, but the more I thought about it and the more I paid attention to folk discussing games they've never played and generally talking about RPGs without playing them I realized it was something that strongly resonated with me.
The awesome Thomas T was making avatars and giving them away, so I picked up one of the unclaimed ones. A Superman shield made me think of, well, Superman. Specifically in his role as championing a cause. I found that inspiring, and so immediately snagged the avatar.
Since then I've taken on the goal of teaching people as many different games as I reasonably can, and my gaming has notably improved because of it.
Why Treize? Because he's the character in Gundam Wing that wins; he is the true hero of that story.
My current one ...this evening (Wednesday night June 27th, 2007) was taken this past sunday during my regular GURPS:TRAVELLER game. That thing behind me is the deckplan of the ship.
I tend to like actual pictures of myself as my avatars - its an honesty thing. If I'm going to maybe argue with someone , or hold a position about something - prefer its my face doing the talking.

My old avatar was a picture of me. But that gave some people nightmares so I used one of my drawings instead. This one was just simple enough to shrink down well. And it fits 'cause I'm a relative youngster on this board.
Now that I think of it, it might be about time to change the "ugly" bit to suit the new pic.
I'd feel odd using a picture of or a drawing by someone else than me... not sure why. Unless it was animated. I can't animate yet, so that's okay.
I use an old picture of me. I posted to RPG.net for years, but no one seemed to remember me because I didn't have an avatar. This is one of two or three pictures of myself that I have that are about the right size because I shrank them for my livejournal.
I think I'm going to change it to one of the others and see how that goes.
I just wanted something that said Hawaii so I pulled out Punchy and drew a pistol in real quick.

Yeah, yeah--I know they're slow. It doesn't matter how slow they are, baby! They're implacable! You never know they're there until they're dragging you across the stone plaza in their hooked nets, annointing you with oil and T-rex urine to please their ravenous God of the Pit.
Creeps me out, man . . .
I intentinally tried to find a cool pic of the rook chess piece. I've always gone by some iteration of Rook on the internets. I just happened to find a good one during the "Go Play" initiative on RPG.net, and had someone mod it up to have some goplay imagery. I've been using it since, and probably will continue to for a long time to come.
Well, I use the name "Sacrificial Lamb" on various message boards. The name was a kind of joke, because when playing computer games with friends several years ago, I'd be the first to get gibbed, hence I was the designated "Sacrificial Lamb". So I changed my name to "Sacrificial Lamb", and in the computer game, Rune, "Halls of Valhalla", everyone knows me by that name, though they often call me "Sac", for short.
I figured I'd grab a pic of a cute little lamb to go with my screen name. It works. :keke:
