Title: Which of these technologies is the best to include in my story?
Post by: Maximum7 on October 28, 2019, 11:31:52 PM
I'm trying to make a Star Wars story and I was wondering which of these technologies would fit best into Star Wars and/or you'd like to see explored in the Star Wars galaxy. You can pick more than one (but obviously not all of them). I will provide links for some you may not be familiar with. When you pick, try to keep in mind if it could fit in Star Wars but also at the same time, not something that we can assume already exist in some form. Here's the list.

1.) Respirocyte- Artificial red blood cell

 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Respirocyte

2.) Gravitational balloon-Completely hollow shell worlds can also be created on a planetary or larger scale by contained gas alone.

3.) Hoopworld- https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yrsPHPYX0TI

4.) Force Helmet- Something like the God Helmet but it actually WORKS and studied the brain when using the Force.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_helmet

5.) Graser weapons- Energy weapons using the power of gamma rays

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-ray_laser

6.) Artificially merge white dwarf stars to create energy- A power source.

7.) Matrioksha brain- https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrioshka_brain

8.) Quantum vacuum thruster-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_vacuum_thruster

9.) Nano-nullifiers- Nanotechnology to render explosives useless.

10.) Nano de-molder- Nanites that make moldy food edible again.

11.) Effluvial dampeners- Tech to make smelly places smell good.

12.) Genomic vaccine-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA_vaccination

13.) Studies on Quantum cognition-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_cognition

14.) Solution to the Black Hole Information Paradox-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole_information_paradox

15.) Quantum telescope-https://physicsworld.com/a/quantum-telescope-could-make-giant-mirrors-obsolete/

16.) Sending water into space with lasers

17.) 2D dumpsters for space garbage removal- Put garbage into the 2nd dimension. Two dimensional space https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-dimensional_space

18.) Space blimp

19.) Artificial magnetosphere- I think they have this but I could be wrong.

20.) Applications of Wave particle duality-https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wave–particle_duality

This would make a cool Star Wars location.

11.) Effluvial dampeners- Tech to make smelly places smell good.

This would be an interesting item to smuggle for the Hutts.

I don't think any of the technologies you propose fit in the Star Wars milieu.

Crashing stars together to generate energy isn't really necessary...  In the first movie they had reactors that generate enough energy to destroy a planet.  In the most recent movies they have the technology to 'drain' all the energy from an active star.  As stupid as that last part is, if you're sticking with canon, well...

Things like a Graser are really just lasers.  And we know that their blasters fire something more akin to a plasma bolt.  You can dodge it, and it definitely travels at subluminal speeds.  Actual lasers don't fit with the cinematics of the universe.

Star Wars is a space opera, not hard sci-fi.  When you use the technology to tell the story you're not telling a Star Wars story.

Yes I've been told that time and time again and I agree that the main story is about the Force and "magic" but scientists exist in Star Wars and they surely must be doing something.

I beg to disagree, The Dyson sphere works within the setting just fine, it would provide for an endless dungeon or several missions on a long campaign due to the sheer size of the construct. Even a smaller one lets say the size of the moon provides a huge amount of space.

But in the general sense yes, you're correct, it's the rule of cool over the science, it's a western in space. I might even recommend Marcial Lafuente Stefania's novels as inspiration for adventures. Along with the unforgiven, the seven samurai, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

If you're hearing it time and time again,  maybe you should listen.
