Just like the title says. Let's predict what the next internet-RPG darling will be. It could easily be called the next RPGnet darling. Usually, it's evident, but currently I'm at a loss. So, what's your guess?
I guess Scion sounds probable. At least in short-term perspective.
Could be Unhallowed Metropolis, or Starblazer or mayb even BRP.
DnD 4e?
It might not be a "darling" but it might explain why there aren't any obvious ones for now. All the hype is currently reserved for this one thing.

Ryan Dancey's book on making d20 story-oriented.
Cthulhutech.
That game John Wick is working on, and which last time I checked sounded like a blend of Reign and HeroQuest.
Dresden Files.
What's this thread doing in the Off Topic forum, btw?

Starblazer was getting some attention but I'm predicting Dresden Files as the next internet RPG darling.

I stuck it here because I didn't know where the conversation would go. So far, it's civil enough.

That's a good call. The only thing is that it's release date is so vague (and seems to be constantly extended) that it may have used up a good chunk of its darling status before it's even out of the gate.
If it comes out soon enough (i.e., to beat out other potential darlings), then possibly Far West (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6006&page=2).
Key ingredients of hotness: (1) FATE engine. (2) Bizarre genre mashup to appeal to jaded RPGnet palate. But based on this (http://gmskarka.livejournal.com/#entry_331903) it sounds like GMSkarka is interested in doing something more than just exploiting a few hot buzzwords--which could ultimately cut either way in attaining darling status.

Oh yeah. FATE is definitely the darling system of choice.
Speaking of darlings, what happend to DitV? Old Darlings are often discarded when new darlings comes along. Damn those fickle gamers.
Well, in a years time, it's obviously going to be Stone Horizons! :haw:
At the very least, OHT, it will be the RPGSite darling.
(And despite not posting, I keep up with all your posts in the design forum. BTW, if you're thinking of making armor a resource, you've just made it hit points, IMHO).

Aw shucks! With 4 or 5 people anyhow! :D

Sent you a PM so as not to derail the thread.
Back to your regular transmissions! :D
John Wick's game Houses of the Blooded will most likely be the next RPG.net darling.
I plan on getting it, it sounds awesome.
I'm hoping it's my new game, "Remains of the End". Due out in early 2008.
It's a story game that allows people to play out their favorite dramatic romance novels or movies; inspired by the deep character-building dramas produced by Merchant Ivory Productions and the novels of E.M. Forester.
It uses my innovative "BRIDGE" system, where character traits are used to place bids between two "teams" involved in a conflict.
For example, PC #1 (George Emmerson) wants to express his passion to PC #2 (Lucy Honeychurch) with a kiss. The GM decides that he will be on PC #1's side, with PC #3 (Charlotte Bartlett) being the partner for PC #2.
The play starts with PC #1 making his bid as to how many results of 4 or higher he can make using appropriate traits from his character sheet for the action as well as declaring which die he can use to make them (ranged from d10, the easiest - to d4, the hardest).
In this instance, George has "charming Englishman - 2d6" as a trait, so he bids "1 - d6". Play passes to Lucy, who has "chaste virgin - 3d8", so she bids "2 - d8" The GM hand is always a dummy hand, with a set of traits decided by the GM based on the situation. In this case, there is an entry for "Rural Barley Field - 3d8", so George elects to raise his bid to "3 - d8". But, Charlotte has "stern chaperon - 4d6". She decides to go all out and bid "4 - d6".
Then, all sides involved roll all their dice, each counting successes. Depending on how many more successes a side gets, which dice they succeed with, and the amount bid, fallout is determined. In this example, George succeeds by 1 of his d6 rolls. He gets the result, "chaste kiss"; Lucy goes along with the kiss, but then pulls away and nothing further happens. If he had gotten more successes, he might have gotten "deep kiss" or even "cop a quick feel". However, had Lucy's side won, he would have risked losing honor or possibly even being slapped.
Regardless of peoples misgivings I think Dark Heresy will make quite a splash.
Mind you, it'll probably prove too popular to achieve full darling status. For that it'd need to be printed on bog roll and only available at conventions.

Hm, it does sound interesting, starts to lose me (in the review I found) at the fact that the PCs are "nearly human". By itself this means nothing, but I've begun to take this aspect of "PC specialness via occult qualities" (like "clumsy genre mashup") as a sign that the game is going to bug me in other ways.
P.S. Jgants you're a very funny dude.

He did a long interview about the game on the Sons of Kryos Podcast. He mentioned that the game is a lot like an Alternate L5R where the Scorpion Clan runs everything.
Whatever the hell that means.

Ninjas.
So you know how I feel about it.

I often play a similar game with my wife, I call it grope and duck.

Other than the omnipresent Exalted.

Make sure that it has absolutely
no combat mechanics and I'll personally buy a hundred copies myself.
!i!

I'd say SotC and Scion are running neck in neck.
my vote on the next one....
EvE the RPG from White-Wolf...
It's a recent Sci-Fi license and ...it's made by White-Wolf!
i would say that, at best, it's really going to be cthulhutech and/or unhallwed metropolis - but they won't have the pull to really be a 'darling', and it depends on how they are received. Eve certainly won't I fear (did WoW?). In fact I suspect the day of the darling has declined. :D

WoW didn't....but Serenity did.
I also don't think WoW was ever pushed (like Scion, or Exalted 2nd), EvE for sure will be.

WoW was so fucking butchered that no one cared about it. Plus, it's basically just a D&D mod, so doomed from the get go when it comes to darling status.
Though admittedly, the complete clusterfuck that is M&M managed to achieve darling status for a little while, to my continued astonishment.
Quote from: AlnagI guess Scion sounds probable. At least in short-term perspective.
Hmm not that likely, considering the mass-appeal failing of Orpheus

First they have to hit the market. They're losing ground with each passing day.
Seanchai
yep, they lost me six months ago. I would have brought the game then. Not now. Problemw ith CY is they are more obsessed with their art than knowing how to run a business. Big mistake.
