Title: Thread of Noxious Love
Post by: joewolz on January 10, 2007, 03:09:06 PM
So, Dominus Nox.  The lovable scamp of therpgsite?  Our retarded comrade?

I love your posts Nox.  They have a positive impact on my therpgsite.com forum experience.  Your craziness is awesome, as are the absolutely bizarre bones you pick.

Yet you continue, in your lucid moments, to contribute successfully to discussion.

We love you Nox.  You may be an occasionally completely batshit rabid kid, but you're OUR occasionally completely batshit rabid kid.

Everyone, share your love of teh Nox!

I'm periodically amazed by his occasional episode of lucidity.  There are some topics on which he can actually make sense -- sometimes good sense.  Er, no, I can't think of any off hand.

I give him shit for his crazy (bad enough to warp adjectives into nouns), but he starts some good threads.

I ain't callin you out, Nox.  The discussion about banning Paul made me think of your posting style.

I'm not insulting your intelligence, I was being hyperbolic.  Your presence is part of what makes this board fun for me.

I'll gladly match IQ test results over beers should we ever meet in real life.  Whoever wins can buy the first round.

I'm not enamoured of Nox, but his posts do stimulate discussion (most of it about how ignorant he is!). I also think it is a tribute to this site that such a perceiptively retarded individual is allowed to keep posting.:D :p  Theres one little freedom that you enjoy Noxy Boy!

Nox keeps me here.  Ignoring the rep he's earnt for himself, his posts drive the forum.  For a site thaat makes such a big deal over thread contribution Nox is it's golden child.

So he's got issues. And he can't quite accept the infamy he's earnt without considering it an insult.  But he's one of the more vibrant characters and RPGsite would be be a dull place without him.

I have to admit, that if everyone started as many threads as Nox we'd be in unbelievable shape.  It would be wonderful. So I have to give him credit for that, at least he's starting threads, which a lot of other people here are undercontributing at.

Now, if people could do that without actually being like Nox that would be even better.

So you would like more people to contribute as heavily as he, without being so ... noxious. :)

About starting threads? Quality, not quantity.

One rpg thread is worth ten off-topic threads!

A vanity search (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/search.php?searchid=48769) tells me that I have started 48 threads, in the following sub-forums,

JimBobOz's Threads
Role-Playing Games: 36
Game Design & Theory Forum: 1
Electronic and Other Games: 0
The RPGPundit's Own Forum: 1
The Official Amber DRPG and Erick Wujcik Fanforum: 0
The Craft of Gameplay (and Actual Play): 3
Play-by-Post Games: 1
Off-Topic Discussion: 6
Help Desk: 0

Or 42:6, 7 rpg threads to 1 non-rpg thread.

Now let's compare to old Nox (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/search.php?searchid=48771).

He has 123 threads, as follows:

Dominus Nox's Threads
Role-Playing Games: 81
Game Design & Theory Forum: 0
Electronic and Other Games: 1
The RPG Pundit's Own Forum: 0
The Official Amber DRPG and Erick Wujcik Fanforum: 0
The Craft of Gameplay (and Actual Play): 0
Play-by-Post Games: 0

Off-Topic Discussion: 39
Help Desk: 2

Or 82:41, 2 rpg threads for every 1 non-rpg thread.

So I start conversations about rgs 6/7, or 86% of the time, while Nox starts rpg conversations only 67% of the time. He has almost as many Off-Topic threads as I have threads (39 to 42)! Since this is an rpg forum, obviously I am superior! PWNED, NOX!

My logic is irrefutable.

She did, but then The Forge and RPGPundit taught me that it's okay.

Ignoring your dislike of the off-topic fora, which is irrelevant to me; you are another great example of a poster that is a heavy contributor; much moreso than Nox because you have way more threads that aren't about idiotic topics (that, by the way, should have been the real basis for your comparison; he has like twice as many threads as you, but about half of his threads are just "nox rants" from his standard four-topic list).

The thing is, though, that most posters on here, including people who are logged on just as much as you, don't come even close to that number of threads started.  If they did, theRPGsite would be an even cooler place than it already is (not that we're doing at all bad, but there's always room for improvement).

Like I said before, my goal would be for the entire front page to consist of threads that were "Last posted" either "today" or "yesterday".

I personally would hate a place where everyone felt obligated to start threads. You'd probably get a heck of a lot of crap threads and thread duplication.

Apart from his Four Standard Rants, I don't think it's easy to say that this or that topic is more or less idiotic than another.

So for example, recent threads of mine have often been humorous - Accreditation for Gamer Geeks (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3880), "I am an angry GM" (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3845), and so on. Others have been simple questions, How did you start gaming? (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3864), and How much do you spend on munchies? (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3876) It's debatable which is a better contribution, or if either is of any worth at all.

People could do the same with Dominus Nox's threads. I leave it to others to judge the worth of threads, the thread-starter is naturally biased in favour of themselves ;)

Quote from: RPGPunditThe thing is, though, that most posters on here, including people who are logged on just as much as you, don't come even close to that number of threads started.
That's simply the nature of all forums. Of all thsoe who find the forum and look at it, most will never sign up. Of all those who sign up, most will never or rarely post. Of those who post, most will never start threads. Of those who start threads, most of their threads will be of interest to very few readers.

The thing is, most of the people who have something to say, and it's something others are interested in hearing, they'll find some other format to do it in - their own blog, books, whatever. It's rare that they'll devote their writing efforts to a forum. The best you can hope for is that some prolific and worthwhile writers will toss a thread or two your way...

Again, I leave it to others to judge my posts' worth. But at the least, most of them are on the topic of the forum. What I say may be interesting, boring, great or stupid; but it's at least relevant. More or less.

Okay, I take it back. There actually is an objective standard of the value of a poster's threads. Dominus Nox has posted in the roleplaying forum a thread asking, Hitler's Stats? (http://www.therpgsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3888) That falls below the standard.
Title: Thread of Noxious Love
Post by: James McMurray on January 15, 2007, 09:51:26 AM
Why? Can you never foresee a need for Hitler's stats in a game? Or is it just not good enough for your over-inflated sense of forum values?

Really? Care to reveal what this is? Don't get me wrong, I think Nox is pretty silly, but certainly not any more offensive than you are from time to time. Or for that matter a lot of posters here.

But then I'm pretty thick skinned, and cynical. If that thread was an attempt to shock me, well he'd have to try a hell of a lot harder. Having some kid discussing "stat'ing" Hitler is pretty lame after you've actually had to stand toe to toe with some card carrying members of the Aryan Brotherhood.

The more traffic the kid gets, the more he'll post. The harder he'll try.For a guy who is pretty smart at times Jimbo, you're pretty crappy at this whole interaction thing. I hope in real life you're better because your games sound like they'd be pretty cool to play in.

What? But I wanna kill me some Nazis! Or apply an undead template to Hitler for a Hellboy game. Or something.

I don't want to "force" anyone, but I get the feeling that there are a LOT of people on this site who probably have stuff to say (ie. new threads to start) who for whatever reason don't bother to do so. And I think that's a pity.  I'm just being a cheerleader for getting more people to start conversations here, and obviously not meaningless ones.

Yes, there is. It's the Noxstick, which we can use to measure the silliness of posters. He's our measure. It's very scientific, objective standard.
