Title: The Exquisite Corspe (via IL)
Post by: jdrakeh on December 31, 2006, 04:41:06 AM
JimBob's Thunderdome thread gave me pause to think that Ignore Lists could make for a great way to facilitate forum games of Exquisite Corpse (this is probably a Swine Game, but it's a lot of fun). Don't know what Exquisite Corpse is?

Equisite Corpse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisite_corpse)

Basically it's a kind of parlour game that grew into a Surrealist creative technique. Online play has always created a bit of problem, as foldig pack your PC screen isn't exactly an easy endeavor.

I think, however, that vBulletin's Ignore List feature could be (deliberately) put to good use in this capacity, with two (or more) posters who are ignoring each other's posts agreeing (beforehand, obviously) upon a topic and/or strcuture, then going 'blind' using the ignore lists during actual play.

Even with smebody on your IL, you can still count posts, so I think that agreeing upon a pre-set post limit for a game, going blind for play, and then un-ignoring posters to view the final results of the game might work out rather well.

Of course, that's conjecture. And. . . ah. . . if anybody were to try this, would it go in the actual play forum? I suspect that the output of the first few games might look a little like Hybrid, at least until a trun structure is agreed upon and adhered to (even the original EC has that much).

Anybody interested in giving this a spin? We could do. . . oh. . . I dunno. . . fantasy setting design, one sentence (or fragment) per post, with a limit of. . . ah. . . 50 posts? Or is that too few? You tell me.

Let's start small -- 10 posts each, just to try it out.  Set up shop in Theory, since what you're wanting to do is kind of Out There.

Fantasy setting is A-OK with me, say, a paragraph per post?

Okey dokey. Pargraph per post it is. I'll start it off over in Theory. Welcome to my ignore list, you magnificent bastard! ;)

Shouldn't this be in the Play by Post forum? (If anywhere at all)

That's what I thought, but I agree with the good Doctor -- it's not so much a game as it is a creative technique, so I started it in Theory. If it needs to be moved, I'm certain it will be.

You got room for another, or would it be easier with only two?

[Edit: The round is already in progress over on "Theory". Be sure to IL ME after you read the first post on that thread. You can go ahead and ignore Rotwang now ;)]

Is it too late to sign up? If not, I'm supposed to put everyone who is participating on IL and there's a ten post limit, right?

Well, everybody is pretty much used up their ten turns. I suggest that you wait for the next round (or start a new round of your own, after reading the first).

And. . . I've just finished up my ten turns. Doc apparently finished up earlier today. I'm going to un-ignore folks now, 'cause I can't wait to see the results (and, yes, I know that Ken still has two turns to him).

I just viewed the output from the first round and, honestly, I'm impressed. I think I'd rather play in that setting than any commercial setting I've purchased in the last five years (with the possible exception of Arduin).

So. . . is there any reason we shouldn't be compiling these game outputs into (free) PDFs? Provided all participating parties consent, of course. I figure that Copyrights could be held jointly.

Just finished up my posts, too.  It was a great exercise, and wow!  Everyone's contributions were great.  I'd definitely play in that world.

And I like the .pdf idea!

Well, if Doc gives his consent, I've got a ton of medieval woodcuts screaming to be used and a week of (mostly) free time. I'll just attribute the copyright to the three of us us (alternately, we could just release it to the public domain). I guess I'll need you to PM me with your full names, though.

Hmmm...lemme think about it.  Gimmie some reasons why I shouldn't do it.

Honestly, I can't think of any past the obvious "Hargrove will swipe the property, sell it to Disney for millions, build a giant Death Ray on the moon and obliterate Key West. . . because he can" -- other than that, I agree with Ken that releasing the game output into the public domain is the way to go.

I simply thought that the resulting setting hooks (i.e., the game output) might be a handy resource for gamers who are looking for a "ground up" setting in a pinch (for one-shots, pick-up games, etc). I'd be happy to compile and host the PDFs (and, of course, all of the players as well as theRPGsite will get credited).

Honestly, I think that the Beat Generation would approve ;)

Excellent! I'll compile something this weekend and post it for feedback. Now your PM makes much more sense ;)

James, Doc and KenHR, I'm taking you guys off IL. I've made six posts and and that's all I can manage. I'll look at the thread, when the game is over. Sorry guys, but I thought I could handle space opera....guess  it ain't as easy as I thought.

Bummer.

I was running short on inspiration, too.

Ah, well.  Maybe we could start another down the road.  But let the batteries recharge first.
