Title: Sadako vs Kayako (The Grudge vs The Ring)
Post by: Nexus on April 22, 2016, 06:48:59 PM
The film that answers the eternal question: What happens if you play the type from The Ring in The House from The Grudge?

Though I'm a enough of J-horror fan that I really want to see this (or the inevitable American remake).

That looks pretty awesome. My favorite Japanese horror film is Pulse: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse_(2001_film) which hasn't seemed to get the same amount of traction amongst western audiences.

The original The Eye (which I think came out same year as the Ring) was pretty awesome. The events at the end are based on a real incident in Thailand.

I really enjoyed both Pulse and the Thai horror film The Eye.

Another J-horror I liked a lot is Dark Water. Not so fond of the American remake.

I'll have to check out The Eye and Dark Water, I was reading a review of Dark Water on IMDB earlier. I think I might have seen the remake, which I'm not very big on seeing the remakes, but I'll watch them if they are on. The Ring was pretty good though for a remake. I was looking through a catalog of Japanese horror films, some pretty crazy titles there.

I have a Japanese brother in law, but he's sort of useless for Japanese stuff beyond food and such, which is normal.

My wife and I watched a bunch of J-horrors. We found that the remakes are usually not really worth the effort, being either as good as or worse than the original.

Though certainly not perfect Premonition and Infection also stood out to me for their ominous and menacing atmosphere, respectively. Also liked Uzumaki for its weird and surreal mood, though the manga was better.

I've been reading and hearing good things about Audition, but I'm not that keen on torture stuff so I'm still on the fence about giving it a go.

I'm not into the torture stuff either, I'm more into the atmospheric horror (existential?), I'll check out Premonition and Infection.

Even remakes of earlier Hollywood movies are usually a weaker version.

If you're into manga, you should definitely check out Gyo, Museum of Terror and Uzumaki by Junji Ito for some weird and creepy unsettling shit.
