Some pet food that's out there right now has been linked to "kidney failure and death" among pets eating it.

Relevant links follow:

I'm a pet owner (and an animal lover) so please spread the word about this to anyone you know who is also a pet owner!

This is very serious for cats (not sure about dogs) because once they have a protein deficiency that leads to kidney failure, it can pretty much cause them to go into a spiral that kills them.  It happened to one of my cats a few years ago for reasons we never really figured out.  Once the kidneys get damaged, they produce a hormonal cascade of problems such as anemia.

For whatever reason, when cats process fat into energy (when they don't get enough food or protein) it causes their bodies to scavenge muscle tissue for proteins that they can't make which, in turn, damages the kidneys as it gets taken out of their blood.  So a cat that doesn't eat needs to be taken care of immediately, even if that means force-feeding the cat or getting a feeding tube inserted.  Once their kidneys, go, unless you are rich enough to afford a cat kidney transplant, the prognosis isn't good.

It's very good karma for you to post this on the off chance it might save a even a single pet's life and a single family the sadness of losing a member early. I salute you for taking the time to post this.

My dog's food isn't on the list, thank God.

My mother and stepdad recently lost their 14-year-old cat to kidney failure.  This stuff is total bad news. :(

Fortunately, the only food my Bear will eat isn't on there. Which is good, because kidney failure got my last cat around 15, and it's a hard way to go.

If you'll excuse me, I think I need to pet my cat for a while.

Thank you, Nox.

I felt I needed to post this because it probably won't make the news.  It's also the kind of thing pet owners would want to know.  People need to know this because if you have pets, you don't want to have them be hurt by the food you buy them.

RPG.net is down or I would have started my second thread ever in Tangency, since there are so many pet owners over there.

We lost a wonderful 7 year-old cat that way.  Tell me about it.  Though we never figured out exactly what happened and tried to stay on top of it from the first sign of trouble, if a cat doesn't eat, it's bad news.  This is also why I feed the feral mother of two of our indoor cats that still hangs out around our yard when it gets really cold and things ice over in the winter, so she doesn't damage her kidneys just burning fat.

You're a good man to have posted this.

Why not post it on the SJG forums since you can't get it on the purple pit? I might want to see some "people" over there under a bus, but I wouldn't wish harm to their pets under any circumstances.

Thanks Joe! I did my part and passed the info elsewhere.

I count myself lucky that my cat's food isn't on the list.

It seems my sister's cat has kidney issues now.  He stopped eating so they force-fed him and managed to pull him out of the spiral, but damage was done. We're holding out hope.  No idea if it was related to the food recall at this point.

Latest news is that it might have been a toxic chemical generally found in rat poison. If this was deliberate, this is fucking shitty. And if the person is caught, I actually wouldn't bet on him living a long, happy and healthy life.
