It's a great film. I enjoyed it a lot.

If I absolutely loathed the 300, and dislike action movies that rely on CGI in general, is there any hope I'll like Beowulf?

Hahahahaha.  :)

It would have been a decent movie and not nearly criticized so badly if they had just not called it Beowulf.  At least Crichton had enough sense to draw from the legend, but name his work Eaters of the Dead/the 13th Warrior to make it clear that it was only an adaptation.

So is Beowulf more like the 13th Warrior, or like the 300?

Well, the movie Beowulf (like the 13th Warrior) is loosely based on the real legend of Beowulf/Grendel, but the visual look and superhero-type stunts make it a bad adaptation of it, IMO. It definitely caters more to the videogame crowd than those who would have prefered a more mythological take on the story.  That's why I think they should have just renamed it.  

If you don't like CGI, though, you probably won't like this movie.

I'm curious as to what you mean by more mythological. I haven't seen the movie and it's been years since I read the poem, but I seem to remember Beowulf tearing off someone's arm, and killing a dragon. Those seem like pretty superheroic feats to me.

I suspect he refers to the visual spectacle. Beowulf doesn't just rip off an arm, he does it nekkid after leaping from the rafters and wrestling with a giant five times his size.

The Dragon fight resembles more Arnold fighting a jet from True Lies in some ways....:D
