Title: [Films] Idiocracy
Post by: pspahn on May 28, 2008, 01:42:41 AM
Look, I know it's been out for awhile, but it still amazes me that some people haven't seen this yet.  It's got to be the most entertaining modern satire I've seen in years.  Please go rent it or buy it (I've seen it for $5 in the Wal-Mart bargain bin) and enjoy.

And I can't shake the idea that there is an RPG in there.  Not sure if it would play out as funny as it does on TV, but the setting book would be a fun read.  :)

I just ordered a Brawndo T-shirt from brawndo.com.  Brawndo's got what plants crave.  It's got electrolytes.

This movie is awesome. I just watched it again a couple of nights ago.  There are just so many funny parts in it. :haw:

I loved that movie.

More and more I run into people commenting that the movie scares them because they believe that the world will end up like that.

Part of what makes it so funny is that a lot of it is just a (slight?) exaggeration of things you can already see.

I used to have a co-worker who told me about a time she showed a friend a photo she took from the window of her plane as they flew over some clouds.

Friend: "What are those?"
Co-worker: "Those are clouds."
Friend:  "Well, what's that then?"
Co-worker:  "This?  It's the wing of the plane."
Friend:  "Yeah RIGHT."
Co-worker: "Um...what?"
Friend: "So your plane was ABOVE the cloud?"
Co-worker: "...yeah..."
Friend: "Yeah.  Then where's HEAVEN then?  Hunh-hunh."
Co-worker:  "..."

She told me about another time when they were all driving through some thick fog and they tried to explain that it was like a cloud.  Her response was: "Sure you guys, I'm not falling for THAT again."

Not seen the film, but i've just come back from town. I was in a que at the supermarket and the woman in front of me was educating her 2 children about the natural wonders of the world...

She was waxing lyrical about the Arctic Jungle...One of her kids asked her if it was like the Amazon and she said, "That's right!"

The stupid cow.  That's the Antarctic Jungle, the geothermally warmed lost land featured in the X-Men comics from the late '70s.  I would have been totally crawling up my kid's ass over that gaffe.

Yeah, those are too close to the Mountains of Madness for my taste.  I mean, one minute you are lounging around, waiting for Jean Grey's top to slip down (again) and the next minute, a six foot penguin is pecking at your head.

That movie became an instant classic amongst my friends.

Just last night at the game I asked Eric what his skill check was while he was scribbling notes on his character sheet and he responded "Shut up! I'm 'batin."

What freaks me out is that AFTER I saw Idiocracy, I started to notice these two espresso stand chains -- Cowgirls Coffee and Chicka-Latte -- were slowly taking over old independents stands I used to frequent.  Both of these chains exploit the same gimmick: hot barristas in skimpy outfits.  Chikka-Latte has their girls dress up in "sexy" costumes, while cowgirls just puts them in lingerie.

I keep waiting for them to advertise the Gentleman's Special.  Then starbucks will jump on board, and then life imitates satire.

Quote from: StuartWHAT?!? :haw:

You've got to be joking.

Sadly, no.

I pulled into a Cowgirls because it used to be the stand I went to after getting out class years ago, and I was in the neighborhood.  As I pulled in, I realized they'd changed it a bit (new paint job, new name), and then saw this sign that said "No Video Cameras or Picture Phones."  Then when I pulled up to the service window, instead of the normal ledge arrangement so you can only see the server from the waist up, the whole thing was designed like a peep show booth, so you could see her in there no matter where she was.  And she was wearing a red bra and panties.  She was okay, but kind of on the unhealthy thin with sharp knees end.  She didn't have a pretty face.

Being raised Catholic, all I could do was sit there and think "If I look, I'm going to go to Hell."  But like the lids were positioned so she had to stretch up to get them, and the cups were placed low and towards the back so you'd get a really nice shot of her ass when she bent to get a cup. So it was hard to not gawk.

Driving away, I had the exact same feeling the few times I've pulled out of the parking lots of strip clubs or porn shops.  That feeling like "Dear god, I hope none of the respectable people I know drive by and recognize my car."

The Chikka-Latte's aren't anywhere near that bad, and I'd go back to one if it was the only thing available (whereas I'll never go back to Cowgirls again, I don't need an extra shot of shame and guilt with my coffee).  The girls there wear less revealing outfits -- your typical sexy holloween costume sort of things, I've stopped by the Holman Way stand twice, and once the girl was wearing a black leotard, tights, and cat ears, the second time a different girl was wearing a pink leotard and tights with a tutu and a fairy wand.  So it's more silly/flirty than porntastic.  And the supplies aren't set out in such an obviously exploitive way.

But still.  I wish espresso stands would hire based on ability to pull a cup of coffee, not ability to fill out a bra.  Because these places tend to have inferior coffee.

I didn't really think it was that great. It plainly wanted to be a biting satire, but I only found isolated moments to be inspired. I did find it ironic that the "stupid" humor that the masses of the future will enjoy was, in fact, the comedic backbone of the film for the most part.

I feel the same way about most of Mike Judge's work... Office Space had a few really memorable moments in an otherwise drab story, but Office Space was nowhere near as self-important.

Don't get me wrong, I like Office Space. But all the best gags are in the first forty-five minutes or so, and then the rest of the film just sort of drags along through a botched heist schtick.

The "beating the printer" scene is priceless, though. I feel the same way about Idiocracy, except nothing really comes to mind as particularly brilliant.

You are kidding me?   This was the worst movie I have ever seen.  All I could think about was how I wished I could have the time I wasted watching this piece of tripe back.

I am a fan of Mike Judge (Office Space, etc) but I watched this movie and all I could think was that he was way off his game.

See, I felt the same way after I watched Austin Powers for the first time.  Then I watched it again with some friends and realized it was hilarious.

I've started calling movies like Idiocracy, Austin Powers, Little Nicky, Grandma's Boy, Ali G, etc. "mood comedies" meaning you really have to be in the right mood when you watch them, otherwise you'll HATE them.  :)

I didn't know who Mike Judge was until I read this thread.  I resisted watching Idiocracy because the premise sounded stupid.  Then I happened to be flipping channels and came across it during President Camacho's speech (in the link given earlier) and I knew I had to watch it from the beginning.

ticopelp mentioned that it seemed self-important, but I didn't get that at all.  It's a lighthearted dig on the way most people think the country is heading, taking it to extremes to make the point while still being entertaining.

Invite some friends over, kick back with a few beers, and watch it again.  :)

Well, let me refine my statement a little bit. As a dumb, forgettable comedy, I think it works; as any sort of insightful satire, I feel it doesn't. It's not futurist enough to really work as a satire; it's just a laundry list of dumb contemporary jokes, slightly magnified. There's also a real unevenness to the movie that bothers me; everyone is an illiterate, nearly subhuman imbecile, yet there is an omnipresent dystopian police force and surveillance system, the efficacy of which varies according to their convenience to the plot (and yes I realize this is being nitpicky).

The thing is, I often see this film being heralded by geeks as some sort of brilliant insight into the future of American culture, and I don't think it deserves to have that kind of weight put on it at all. It doesn't hold up under any sort of scrutiny. It does come across as more of a "message" film than something like Office Space or King of the Hill; that's what I meant by the "self-imporant" comment. But whatever messages the movie might have are mostly obscured by fart and "'batin'" jokes.

I do think it has some funny moments, though. I don't think it's terrible. I'd give it about 5/10.

Yes, and if you spent... decades pouring Gatorade on your fields one or two nights of water wouldn't suddenly produce crops. :)

But it's a comedy, so who cares about that. :haw:

Dude.  Come on.

QuoteThe thing is, I often see this film being heralded by geeks as some sort of brilliant insight into the future of American culture,
That's not quite how I took it.  It's far too extreme to ever be considered a possible reality.  I like what it does--takes the "dumbing down of America" up about 20 notches, but I never once felt it was being preachy, or if it was, I was too busy being entertained to notice.

Anyway, to each his own.  But I know more people who loved the movie than hated it.  :)

Rather tangential to the discussion, why do people always feel the need to bring this sort of thing up when it comes to movies? Do you feel it lends your opinion more credibility to quote an invisible, anecdotal majority?

It's just odd; I was discussing another movie elsewhere and someone sprung this one on me. I was "doomed to be in the minority" because I enjoyed a film the rest of the crowd was slagging on, and was apparently expected to change my opinion accordingly. My opinion of a movie isn't tied to how many people liked or disliked it, thank God. And I'm certainly not out to change anyone's mind about it.

As for the film itself, there are people who really do consider it to be a superior work of satire (http://www.avclub.com/content/node/52408). I don't agree. But you're quite right: to each his own.

Yeah, sure, maybe.  Or maybe it's just that I started this thread telling people to go watch a movie and had two people chime in that they hated it.  Mike S even said it was a crap movie, which is quite a blanket statement.

I really don't need my opinion to be validated as you put it, but if I'm on the fence about something (a movie, game, RPG, etc.) I'll check to see what others are saying about it before renting or buying.  If more people are giving it favorable reviews than not, I'll be more inclined to give it a look.  If I happen to like it as well, I don't feel ashamed to be in the majority, but to each his own.
